SKI RACK mounting on rain gutter / fixpoints

Who here has been successful mounting a ski rack on the rain gutters/ fixpoints?

I have been going to a few rack stores and they all say its not available. however, from the research I have done online it seem they are out there.

any help would be great!

AHA! I was JUST about to post a question like this!

i ski a lot and just got the winter tires sorted out for the season, my next query was going to be about the rack...


Anyways...

I am in the same position and called a local ski-rack-store about a rack for the SPEED6 -being very specific that the roof of the car may be different than a regular 6 and the equipment for a regular 6 might not fit correctly.

The guy on the other end said that the listing in his book for the rack that they make doesn't have any special notes that it cant be used on the ms6, but gave me a special 800# for Thule to call and speak to someone on their end for my own peace of mind...I called and lo and behold, Thule isnt open on mondays...(gotta try again today)


It sounds that it'll work famously...

I have a Yakima Q tower system on my 5door. The fit is the same as a sedan.

The MS6 has the exact same roof line, door seals, moulding as a std sedan. The only limitation would be if Mazda put used aluminum as the roof skin instead of steel. I don't believe they did this but honestly don't know for sure.

I carry my skis in a Skybox most of the time since exposure to the road mess will destroy your tune. Plus I can put the wet/smelly gear in there for the ride home.

There is also a new Fixpoint system from Yak that'll fit the 3, CX7 etc. The new 09 6 might have the fixpoints but I haven't seen one yet. There are no fixpoints on the original 6.

If you use a ski mount instead of a box, make sure to get a fairing since this will cut down on the wind noise.

can you tell us more about the skybox?

what does it require as far as mounting? does it use the door jamb clamp things like the other racks use?

Yeah the box attaches to any brand of roof rack.

The rack system sits on the roof and uses a specific clip to grab the body of the car above the doors. The most important thing here is to make sure the roof, tower pad and clip are all clean because you can scratch the paint if there is any dirt. I also recommend taking the rack off on occasion to clean off the grime that can build up.

I've heard of folks putting some clear vinyl (like the clear bra material) under the towers if they use the racks a lot.

Thanks! that sounds great for so many different things...how many pairs of skis/boards will it fit? are boots too heavy for it?

I run a Thule system that I have carried over from a Civic. I have mounted it on a Mz3, MS3, a mazda6 and now it is on my CX7.

i know this thread is like 3 months old... but any updates...
did u guys find a fixed-point system for the mz6/ms6??

o purchased the fixed point rails for my mz3 just before i traded it in & now im stuck w/ them.. too bad they wont work w/ the mz6 .. hehehahe .. now i gotta sell them...

okay so i found out. .they do make a fixed point system for our cars...

just gotta get some part #'s
