Single to double din conversion

another thread because the search function sucks... or maybe i just suck.

has anyone converted from a single din to a double din headunit. i am putting in a pioneer avic-f90bt. i have removed the stock unit and the single din cage/pocket. i ordered the metra install kit, yet it did not come with a double din cage. it only came with the surround face plate and 2 plastic side pieces that screw to the unit. are there supposed to be brackets to secure the unit to the car?

im assuming the metra kit is for the NA protege which utilizes the factory mounting brackets.

Well, sorry to say but that Pioneer of yours DOESN'T come with an install cage. Turns out Pioneer doesn't even offer one for the F90 or any of the AVIC-F series for that matter. Really convenient.

Best bet is to return the Pioneer to wherever you got it from and pick up almost anything else. I absolutely hate the AVIC-F series as they are slow and full of bugs. See my rant --->http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123725620&page=2

Second, you shouldn't have had to purchase a kit for the MSP. They don't need it.

they were slow when they first came out, but the update helped a little bit. there is also an avic forum where they have completely hacked the unit and put software from the new models onto the f series. im not replacing this unit with another, im gonna give it a try. plus ive had it for a long time, no chance in returning it.

how do they not make an install cage for it. i thought every single single din and double din required an install cage so that the units would be secure?

will the install cage that fits the predecessor (D3) work on the f series?

i didnt purchase the kit, it came with the unit free of charge. how do you mount the unit in the car if there is no cage nor installation kit with brackets? when you remove the stock kenwood unit and the lower pocket, there are no stock factory brackets to secure the double din unit to. you cant just set it in there, its too heavy.

thanks for the help.

edit: i just read through my old thread that you linked to. i know you recommended the D3 and what not, but i chose this one for the pricing and some of the features. like i said, ive had it for so long i cant return it and i enjoy the aesthetics of it much more so than the kenwood units at the time. im gonna give it a try, if i cant stand it, then i will eventually swap it out. but for now i just want to get it mounted correctly and give it a try.

The Pioneer double din cage should definitely work. The model number is adt-va133. You don't need any dash kit. The cage kit will allow you to mount and secure the double din and then the trim ring will hide it.

Yeah, completely didn't see that the old thread was from you...that was my stupid moment for the day.

The D3 kit should be the same as stated above. I guess if people hacked the firmware to fix everything, you can't go wrong. Let me know how it turns out.

its no big deal. well i cant finish the install because no one stocks that part. and i cant order it in time before i have to leave. like with everything else, il see how well everything is fixed when i use it. im sure many ppl exaggerate their "success" similar to ppl on this forum.

not saying i dont believe you, but have you seen this cage fit the f series? its just odd they dont list the f series under the applications on the pioneer website.

No, I haven't see it on the F-Series but, I can tell you that the F-Series and the D3 are damn close to the same. I also looked into the installation on the D3 and the F90, both say the same things and neither directly mentions the install kit in the installation manuals. I say get it, worst thing is you are out $40, not too terrible.

alright. definitely sounds like the kit is worth a try. yea 40 bucks is nothn compared to the money ive wasted on this car.

I'm not 100% sure if the Pioneer is a universal double-din size or not, but I just got a double-din Clarion headunit that I'm working on installing. Mine didn't come with an installation sleeve/mounting, so I don't have anything to hold the head unit in place either.

I found this universal mounting kit on crutchfield that I'm planning to use:
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_0202DBKT/Clarion-2DBKT-Mounting-Kit.html?tp=2114
Maybe it would work for you as well, plus this kit is only $20 total.

Anyone used something similar or better before?

Correction, this is the install kit I ended up using:
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-mVk7xU...eiver-Kit.html?search=120997505&ssi=0&tp=3121
It was only $15.
No modification needed and it fits right in the factory opening. I installed my new Clarion headunit tonight, and it slipped right in place pretty easily. Looks factory.

When you remove the stock headunit and install kit, there is nothing to support the aftermarket headunit. hopefully your head unit is light, because the dash surrounding is the only thing stabilizing it.

this cage worked perfect. not only did the cage fit perfectly, but it also aligned perfectly with the vertical support bar behind the opening. the bolt hole in the vertical support lined up perfectly with a mounting location on the cage itself. i cant believe people are installing their double din headunits without a mounting cage to stabilize them...

would this cage work for a AVH-P3100DVD tried to install with out a cage and no luck[/QUOT

Pioneer says that the ADT-VA133 should work for the AVH-P3200DVD and that is the same size as the 3100DVD. If you buy the install kit for the Protege (Best Kits #BKMA1541B) you actually shouldn't need the Pioneer cage. This kit actually is a double DIN ISO mount and is secured to the HU with screws.
