Hey all, This is my first post and first few times on the forum. I'm soon to be 21 years old any parents are buying me a car, yes i know i'm spoiled. They really like the cx-7 ALOT, but when they found out iit only takes premium feul they really turned away from it. Should i really let this hinder the choice of vehicle? Is it really that big of a deal, and also i've read about if you used reg. fuel and what it'd do to the car. Are the stories true? Thanks everyone!

I would not let having to use premium
fuel be the deciding factor.Using premium
results in better gas mileage and helps prevent
pinging(whic can severely damage a turbo).It
probably amounts to $2-4 more per tank, over a year that is really not
a big deal.If you like the CX-7 then get it

Yeah it's a really minimal cost increase. Don't let it stop you, you'll find a lot of cars these day require premium fuels. The Nissan 3.5VQ, new Toyota 3.5 V6, and any turbo cars come to mind.

Since your self-admittedly spoiled, don't sweat the $0.20 more per gallon. Serioulsy, like the others have said its not that big of a deal. In some cars, the computer will not allow the engine to run fully with a lower than called for octane. Running lower octane all of the time combined with boost is a quick recipe for major engine damage.

yeah on most naturally aspirated cars that need premium fuel (like the Protege MP3 for example) you can run them on a lower octane, but the computer will take steps (i.e. retard the timing) to lessen the chance of predetonation of the air/fuel mixture. On the CX-7 or other turbo cars, you can't just do a computer trick to make everything A-OK on cheap gas.

But yeah.. if you don't pay for the gas, go for it :). I just started paying for my own gas (I'm 20) in August.. but as soon as I'm done with my co-op next month and go back to classes for the Winter quarter, my mom will be back to paying them unless I can cram a part time job into my class schedule. She never complained about me using premium fuel because I never went under 30mpg :). If she wanted to complain I'd complain about her getting 18mpg in her 05 altima, my sister getting 20mpg in her 02 Maxima, or my dad getting 12 in his 4.0V6 Mazda pickup :P
