Should I get extended Warantee?

I decided to take the plunge and I bought a 2002 Mazda Protege 5. My god I love this car.

But now I've got another dillema. Should I even consider getting an extended warantee? It's gonna run me an extra 1400-1700 bucks.

The car has a little over 20,000 miles on it, checks out on carfax, and drives like a dream.

Has anyone had any problems in their first few years of owning it? Or any future problems to worry about?

if you are going to mod your car I would stay clear from the warranty. If you are just going to drive it stock I would then.

I have 42000 trouble free miles and my 02, I'd stay clear. For you see I'm a service advisor and a dealer in town and those s*** warrantys don't cover a fat chick in the sun. They are nothing but a hassle for me and u. they won't cover diag and no matter what they tell you its never bumper to bumper (thats bulls***). trust me I would steer a p5 owner wrong

Almost 30,000 miles and 2 years +, '03 P5. Had no big issues and I've never taken it back to the dealer since I bought it with 2 miles on her.

yeah i bought it...and its basically usless now if u look at my mods...but always better to have i think....just incase...and mine hasnt been back to the dealer once scince i bought mine either...

I bought it. It was $1k for an extra 4years/60k miles. If anything, it was worth it for the peace of mind :D Also, the factory warranty was up

Like they said above, it is good to have if you don't plan to modify the car. I did a little modification to the suspension, but nothing else. I don't want to void the engine/transmission warranty.

I have had my car in under warranty however. The VTCS butterflys lost two screws, and got ingested into the number 4 cylinder, bounced around a bit, and then blown out the exhaust. It was a couple thousand dollars in replacement parts and labor, and I got a rental car, all covered for a week. Not too bad.

i don't think u really need it. i never did take my P5 in; however, we did need 2 bring back the '99 ES 1.8L a few times due 2 their screw up. I think it's a matter of your choice tho; but honestly, i think it's a waste of that extra money that u could have used on modifications or even x-mas gift(s).

I've had mine 3 years, 42000 + miles, Mods: SRI, Jspec Cams, Exhaust...............I've had no problems so far :D(knock on wood)

as mentioned before, if you plan to stay stock then get the warranty. if you plan to mod, then dont.

I'm almost positive I only paid $800 from the dealership for my extended warranty (6yrs 100K mi). Its worth it if you plan on owning your car for the extent of the warranty...but for $1400 I don't know. Its all relative to whether something actually breaks. If there is a serious problem with the drive train then you'll wish you had it but otherwise I doubt you would spend $1400 in the next several years on stuff that would be covered by the warranty.

So far I had to replace a ABS sensor at 25,000 miles under warranty and I have 35,000 now with no other problems.

I am not opting for an extended warranty of my 3, but my insurance has a mechanical breakdown insurance I can pay on a monthly basis. I pay a small amount of money and anything over that they pay. Much nicer than a dealer warranty. And I can go to my Mazda mechanic. I don't have to go to the dealership.

If you are anal about maintenance and documenting it, and you get one from Mazda, not a who-knows-who provider, then yes. Otherwise, it's a waste of money.

I wouldn't buy it if I was you - I've got 30,000 on my 03 ES without any problems. Plus, if anything does go wrong, the factory shop manual is available online and tells you how to fix pretty much anything on the car. I hate warranties because there always seems to be a reason that I don't qualify for the repair when something goes wrong. If you were going to get a warranty, I'd look at one of those where you can take your car anywhere, not just the dealer. When I was considering this, I was looking at warrantydirect.com for about $800-1000. Although I would never pay $1400-1700 for it - I would take a lot of serious repairs to make up that much money.
