Should i buy a rx8?

for him not to do something hell regret later. what would be good is for him to ask the dealer if he can take it for a day or two but like i was told rx-8 are like a sexy b**** beutiful in the outside but ugly in the inside but whatever this got boring already ssry mister know it all about rx-8 im done all i know msp kill rx-8's so hed prolly be better getting a msp also handling on msp's that what they were built for

1/4 mile - you're giving msp owners a bad name. Our cars are slower than RX8s and just as fragile if not more so. Move on.

So before anyone tells me to go read all the other forums with people asking the same question, i have a very specific question.
the car im looking at has 130k kms on it, so its out of warranty.
Im thinking about trading my 92 skyline gtr for it because a 2004 should be more reliable then a 92 right? but maybe im wrong.
my car is worth 16000, i dont think any rx8 with that many kms is worth that.

any comments would be really appreciated! thanks everyone!

I guess the choice is yours, really. The skyline, which will run with Porsche Turbos, or the RX-8 which will run with Porsche 914s.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, Hello RX-8 owners,

I'm trying to stay loyal to the brand and I'm looking at an 05 Rx-8 sport, 6sp with 48k miles.

I've never owned a rotary, have been reading as much as I can about them: some topics pop up all the time, so I'm becoming more familiar with the beast.

This particular car appears to have been well maintained and properly broken-in and it has some tasteful mods. I think I'll be able to do most of the work on it, my Mazdaspeed3 and the Miata have never let me down(fingers crossed), I have done most of the maintenance and all mods.

Sorry if this has been covered somewhere else, let's just focus on them engine and ignore suspension, exhaust, rust etc. What items, tests, inspections and whatnot must I really do to make sure I'm not buying into too much a headache.

Thank you, forgive the lengthy post.

Joe

Jma, the two hyperlinks in my sig have a bunch of info that should answere your questions. You might feel better if you can find a local RX8 owner to go look at the car with you.

I would do the following;
Get the vin and do a carfax check and check with Mazda North America for svc history
Compression check is a good idea
Look over any svc reacords the owner has
Take it for a drive. It should ride well, and pull all the way to 9k.
Finally, ask the owner what you need to do to keep the car running well. Compare his answer to what your research has turned up. You should be able to tell if he knows what he is talking about.

What are the tastefull mods btw?

Solidtrance,

I had previously followed your links, found the info very helpful.
The carfax shows one owner, no major anything. MazdaUSA confirmed an emission recall, fuel tank recall and ECU reflash for lack of power. All of this matched what the owner had stated to me via phone/email, he has also service records.

Can any decent decent mechanic do a compression check, or do I need to see a dealer?

I'm going to see and drive the car this Sat. As for the mods: I will not go into extreme detail since it's not yet my car but they are exhaust, springs, nice wheels and tires, 2 sets, air filter.

Asking price is very fair according to the research I've been able to do. I hope I'm not disappointed when I see and drive it, I would like to bring it home.

Thank you for your help!

Sounds like you have done your homework and found yourself a car you will like. Everything sounds good. If the car drives well and the engine is strong you should be all set.

A compression test is easy to do, but you should find someone who is familiar with rotaries, because the procedure is not the same as with regular piston engines.

I hope things turn out well. Post pics when/if you get this car.

there's no way I'd want a 32gtr over an rx8. rx8 is a much better tuning base.
stock a v-spec mite be a tiny bit faster around a track.
where i live skylines a very common car.
and rwd is more fun.

well i have read the whole thread, i must say the RX8 is remarkable in its own way with the 4 doors and stunning interior, the power is lacking but i love the high rev's of the rotary...

having owned a skyline (92 gts-t) and the fack that your in austrailla were parts are readily avaliable for the 92 GTR (godzilla), the car is out of date i understand but im about function over form! the GTR is a beast of a car has major power potential.

conclusion:
-power, speed, all around performance... GTR
-high rev's, 4 doors, balance... RX8

I think there's a little bit of bias IMO, because skylines aren't a dime a dozen around here so when we hear Skyline, we automatically assume it's better.

1992 Skyline < 2005 RX8
New Technology, Better Balance, Better Looks (opinion), Warranty (maybe).
