Shot Peening?

I was thinking recently about getting my tranny gears and all shot peened. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how much this would cost at a shop?

I know the shot peening process would probably cost anywhere from 50 - 200 dollars for the process itself, as it's rather inexpensive, but how much for removal of the tranny/shipping it out/putting it back? I think this may be a worthwhile investment to ensure the life of the tranny.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Not quite sure. My roommate (Who is an engineer) suggested it, and said he knew of three or four companies in the area to do it. I was thinking of bringing it to Martel Racing to get the tranny removed and replaced, but as far as the shot peening itself, I don't have any place in mind off the top of my head.

I'll let you know if I get a name in particular, if it even gets to that stage.

i had a thread about this a little while ago, but nothing came of it. would be great if you can find out what cost we'd be looking at because i'll eventually get my gears shot peened

Out if curiousity, what do you expect to gain from shot peening your gears?

Strength?

I'm an engineer too, and I worked in a engine machine shop for 3 years throughout school. And yes, we used to shot peen rods (connecting rods) for strength as the blast of little beads relieved any residual strain in the part itself after being cast. In addition, it also added strength by beating the surface. Kind of like cold rolling steel. But we would mask the bearing surfaces.

But shot peening is somewhat of a brutal process that I don't see as being good for rotating parts that mesh with one another such as gears.

I have read about cryo freezing gears for strength, and shot peening the shift forks.

i reckon we should just get awr or tripoint etc to make us a direct drop in forged gear set....maybe 6 gears too ;) i have no idea if 6 gears would fit (hks can fit 6 gears into a nissan s14 silvia 5 spd box), but that would be fantastic!!! i'd buy it straight away

Shot peening the gears was an idea I had from a bunch of guys on the Sentra SE-R forums, as well as it being a suggestion from a few others. Cryo treatment was a thought, too, but is a tad expensive, from what I understand. If we could get 6 gears into the car... Damn. =) Granted, I have NO idea how that would work, but I'm sure there's a way. It's nice as a pipe dream, but I'd settle for the gears themselves, in the normal five speed configuration.
