Hey I've looked on the forum and haven't found anything helpful or recent on how to install a short shifter on the protege5, id really appreciate any help thanks :)!!!

my car has a short shifter from previous owner and its so short i practically have to stick my hand in the transmission to change gears...I dont likey it.

TWM is hands down the best short shifter for this car both in quality and design. the only other one i might consider is the b&m ss.

How to Install a TWM shifter ona P5!!!

It is so easy to install a short shifter on the car. I Just bought a TWM short shifter off this Forum a few months ago and i installed it and there are a bunch of steps you have to go through. 1.) Is to Remove the Knob first then pop the Coffee mug tray out and Emergency brake cover 2.) Remove all of the Screws on the Center counsel and the ones behind the Seat. 3.) Next Pop the Back of the Counsel off first and then begin lifting the whole entire Center Counsel off and away from the shifter. 4.)Don't Brake the Plastic Pins that slide into the front by the Coffee Holders because then youll have a gap when you have to re install it. 5.) Next you take the Snap ring Plyers and remove the Snap ring out of the top of the Shifter and your ready to remove the bolts. Ok now that you got the Center Counsel removed take a 3/8 Ratchet with a socket i think its 10mm im not sure on the size but Start loosening all 4 bolts and once you remove the Bolts you can Drop the Shifter out of the car dont worry about it falling on the ground because that's not going to happen because the Exhaust will keep it in place. Ok now if you have a lift Jack the Car up as high as you can go and go under neath the car and remove the 3/8 bolt and 7 mm nut that's holding this shifter in place and Whalah! You've just removed your shifter. 6.) Ok now the hard part is you have to remove the white plastic fitting that is around the Grease ball and make sure that you put new Bearing grease on it and then swap it out from the Old Stick shifter and install it onto the new one. And Whalah just do the Reverse process to install the New one and your done! Have some slap happy shifting lol!(dance)(cabpatch)(usa)(iagree)(band)(rules)(enguard)(drive)(drive)(drive)(drive)(cool)(guitar)(breakn)

which one is it? If it's TWM or Kartboy, i'll buy it from you. or trade you for one that I have which is identical to the B&M

Does anyone have the TWM shifter? I was thinking about this one once I get the pennies together for it...

I do and i installed it myself and i love the Way it shifts i just wish that it was a couple inches shorter just like the same size as the Mazda Miata ones but i don't think that they make it. Check out my Thread 3 pages below here i gave a VERY VERY DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF HOW TO INSTALL IT. =-)

How much shorter would you say it is compared to stock shifter height?

Thinking about getting a TWM short shifter but I'm not really into their shift knobs...I'm guessing because most of them are weighted shift knobs they stick with the metal.

I want to keep it as short as possible and I'd prefer the stitched leather types or carbons over the metal. Maybe some OEM Mazdaspeed that will work?

From everyone's experience does a weighted shift knob make a big difference over a regular shift knob on a short shifter?

Is there anyone else who has a TWM short shifter with a different type of shift knob they would recommend? I'd love to see what they look like.

My stock shifter is squeaking a bit (bushings?bearings?) while shifting and there seems to be a more play then before.

On purchase of the TWM short shifter do you recommend also buying the Polyurethane Bushings and the Shift Boot?

Is the OEM shift boot too big and sloppy after installing the short shifter or can it be modified?

Thanks guys... any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Just get the TWM Short shifter Kit with the Boot Skirt and Bushings!

It doesn't matter whether you have a waited Shifty Knob or a regular shift Knob it will not affect your shifting if anything with a weighted Shift knob you will shift faster. Oh and if your Stock Shifter is squeaking a bit i would pull the center Counsel cover off and try and put some more bearing grease around the Ball shaft you'll see 2 white Couplings they usually Dry out after the years so you might want to make sure that there is enough grease in there. Also i would replace the stock bushings with Polyurethane Bushings. You cant use the Stock Shifter Boot with the TWM Short Shifter it would be way to big and it will look really stupid! Just Buy the TWM Black leather BOOT Skirt with Gray Stitching that one looks the best!

thanks for the reply! I'll be sure to add the poly bushings and shift boot to my order. I'll grease it up in the meantime.
