short shifter install help

hey guys and gals...
got my fidanza short shifter in the mail two days ago and am ready to install. Only problem is that I've never installed a short shifter in a mazda before. I know with the honda all I had to do was get under the car and unbolt the shifter. I've seen the same kinda bolt under my 1.6L but my shifter came with the bearing, and the one on the civic I installed didn't have that bearing on it. Help would be very much appreciated.

It's basically the same thing.. you go under there and unbolt the shifter.. our shifter has these green plasticy bearing things that you'll keep on the stock shifter. Then you need the special tool (or not really I've heard) to take the lock ring off that holds the short shifter down. It was one of the first mods I did to my car and I'm very pleased :)

can I do the install with a basic socket kit? I dont really have a butt load of tools or anything but I have enough to do basic stuff...

you'll need snapon O-ring tool to remove and install the shifter from its place (thats from inside of the cabin) and you will need 10mm socket (i think its 10) to remove the bolt thats linking the shifter to the link bar. Took me and Kooldino about 30 minutes to do the whole instalation.

thanks for all the help. am starting on the install tomorrow afternoon...will definitely let you guys know how it went

go to advance auto or any auto parts store and get a snap ring tool. Or you can do what i did and use very small needle nose pliers. you will see what we are talking about when you see the ring.

w3rd! Definetly get snap ring tool, it will make your install much easier (although I used pliers as well)

successful install guys! was definitely a pain in the ass because the short shifter I got was a little bit longer than the stock one, but I got it in without any real problems. I used a flat head screw driver for that ring that hold the shifter into place...now I just need to cut it down so it's a little more of what I'm used to and get a shift knob that feels right. cause the one that came with it isn't doin it for me...

wait a second....you said the short shifter is longer than stock? how is that possible? Isnt it one of the purposes of the short shifter to be shorter than stock

Probably talking about the length of the rod below the vertex.

yeah the length after the bearing...the piece that MAKES it a short shifter because it's longer. yeah the shifter is actually pretty sweet man. definitely notice the change in rpm's when shifting is a little higher
