Shifting trouble

sorry to thread jack your thread but i rather add on to this one than start a new one. I have lost my first gear and 5th as well as reverse. i bearly made it back to my base with it stuck in third. i'm thinking its the fork or diff but its a turbo'd protege DX and with me trying to figure it out i did the simple thing of jacking the front up and puting it in gear and i have this semi loud clicking noise also my clutch is always engaged even when the shifter is in neutral. i will most likely go replace the whole trans but would like to know just for sure if it might just be a smaller part in the trans itself thats in need of replacing. And this all started with me on the hwy accelerating from 2nd shifting to third and thats when i lost the gears. wish this happend on a friday but any good thoughts would be nice since the car is an 03 and has 54000miles on it. it was already having pop out problems in second and fifth with lite touching of clutch. i guess this is mazda's ford side coming out to try and get me to buy a new car but i like my car so what ever it takes to get it good again.

www.car-part.com I broke a shift fork from 2nd to 3rd at about 2500rpms and ClacKaLacK and wouldn't disengage the gears sheared off about 30 teeth from the 2 gears that make up 3rd. Tranny shop wanted $1750 to rebuild with $1050 worth of parts with me handing them the tranny and putting it back in myself. $509 for used tranny with 26k miles on it. Proteges built before Feb 02 have an early released tranny with weaker parts that where later revised.

Good Luck!!

thanks man for if anything giving me a good clue as to what went wrong and since it was bought in 03 i guess it would have the weaker trans. so with that i just buy a new/used trans. i would try to find a speed one but i'm not to sure about the LSD since some (not all) but some people have broke them and i'm not trying to go through that. thanks again for the info.

Nah if your protege is an 03 model you don't have the weaker transmission. Even the 2002.5 has the upgraded one.

If you find a good source for used trannies let us know though :)

The only thing with the MSP tranny is you need to swap your speedo gear into the transmission if you don't have ABS. Non-ABS runs off of the speedo gear in our trannies instead of off the ABS sensor. I am probably going to buy the protegegarage tranny kit + their welded LSD.

all i could find close to me was a mzdaspeed tranny in houston for 1250 but i'm going to get the one i found in denver for 450 (two other one where 1100 with trade in). just need to find out how the weather is up there so i can go pick it up. i just might take the old on apart to see what the fork is made of and how big it is because i can get some titanium and or aluminum and see if i can get a better on made.
