Shift Knob Rotates, suggestions??

When I bought my protege, the shift knob it came with was super ugly, and falling apart. I replaced it with a universal, that fit real snug when installed, but after a few months, it got loose and I could rotate it left or right. I tightened it back down, and it lasted a few more weeks, but got loose again. I went out and bought another universal, and it has stayed put for about a month, but now is getting loose as well.

Is there a way to keep this from continually happening?? It drives me nuts. Thanks.

some lock tight from auto parts store maybe?

I had thought about something like that. The only issue is the shift knob does not thread onto the top of the shifter. It sits down on it, then there are 3 screws that that apply pressure to the shifter to keep it from moving (think Christmas tree stand). Those 3 screws are the issue. Even if i tighten them down more, they seem to get ground down, or bent on the ends, and just loose grip. Are there shift knobs that will have threads that actually screw onto the shifter like a stock one? If so, anyone know where I can find them? I have looked all over and can only seem to find universals just like the one I have with the 3 screw crap.

stop buying garbage universal knobs that are know for this problem?

hit a junkyard, ebay, TWM and buy one that threads on.

problemo solved!

thanks. I just had a look, like the 5 speed version on the second post. No big on gold.

if you don't feel like paying for one. you car get a drill bit that is slightly smaller that the set screws, mark the spots that the screws hit when tightened. (there will prolly be small intents from tightening them anyway, drill a tad into the shifter at each point. fun the set screws back in with some locktite on them.

don't drill to far, as it will make the shifter very weak at this location.

cool idea! But i would screw it up for sure. Will just end up buying a new shift knob once i have money to. Going on a cruise in a few weeks, so no money to spare.
