Hey I'm new here. I am gonna sell my celica so I can buy a 2003 MazdaSpeed Protege. Can anyone tell me some things about this car? How does it drive?? How Quick is it? Is the Turbo really that great?? Any Info would really be appreciated!!

hey, welcome to the boards. The car is very popular with people. But also it has its problems. If you do a search, you can find out anything you want about the car here.

Twice, he sold it. ;)

Welcome to the club!
Good choice on the car. Although it's no dragster in the 1/4 mi, it'll bring a smile to your face on the twisties for sure!
You sure picked the right place to learn about 'em..(rockon)

car handles wonderfully :D then again, that's coming from a guy who was driving a 4runner before this. but seriously, it handles like no other. the power comes in low and pulls smoothly all the way to redline. there's a slight hiccup at about 4k but i mean very slight. during the day it feels a little sluggish (it's about hi 90s here) but when it cools down, all the power comes back. i do have the beginnings of the clunk, but it's not bad. and my car's going back in for a screeching turbo (possibly not getting enough oil) but i love this car nonetheless :D

all my friends love the car...and one of them used to drive a celica gts too :p

ha ha i sold my celica for a 2003 MSP too

:D

I only sold my Celica for an MSP ONCE....

I think the MSP is far more comfy, and is a better street car than the Celica. I DON'T think it's a better autox car. I may change my opinion on the latter, though...

It's nice to be able to make such a big change in the character of the car with so simple a mod as the MBC... definitely a change from the Celica.

Hooked: How long have you had the GT, and how long in Hampton roads? I lived there for the first 18 months I had my Celica before moving out here to sunny CA...

I don't own either an msp or a celica but I'm considering both. I was under the impression that the msp was the better autoX car since it has a neutral suspension, LSD, a more rigid chasis, better torque curve etc... The one thing that really kills the celica in my mind (at least the GTS) is the fact that the transmission can't keep the engine in the (very narrow) sweet spot. Any comments on this? Any justification of why you think the celica is a better autoX car? Thanks

the new celicas are... well, mediocre. the 2zz-ge powerplant doesn't put out serious sports car power. i know there are a lot of really fast celicas out there (i.e. Chris Rado), but it takes major work to get the new celica to the glory of the old.

The weight makes a big deal: 300 lbs matters. I agree that the powerband of the GT-S is too narrow, but with the right CAI, you can make a large improvement there (the AEM CAI is GREAT!!!)

The handling of the Celica is better than the MSP, at least as far as MY driving style is concerned: I like a loose car, and the MSP tends to understeer at autox speed, while the Celica is almost TOO loose because of the passive rear steering.

When I say autox car, though, the GT is MUCH BETTER than the GT-S! It has better low end torque (where you need it for autox) and weighs less: properly set up, a GS class GT should weigh just over 2300 lbs. At at least 100 lbs for the GT-S...

If you take a look at the SCCA National Tour, Prosolo and National championship results over the last couple years, the GT has dominated GS. That's no accident: it's a light car with a torquey engine and very good power to weight for the class. The GT-S is poorly classed in DS with the ITR, BMW 330, WRX, and now the MSP. Next year, the GT-S is moving to GS as well, so BOTH Celicas will be in the same class. I think the GT will still come out on top, but time will tell since no one has really bothered with the GT-S so far because of the class...

What glory of old? The ONLY celica EVER MADE faster than the current GT-S is the old AWD turbo All-Trac of the 5th gen, in the early '90s...

The 2ZZ does great for what it is, it's just too peaky and stressed so highly that it doesn't respond too well to mods (or misshifts, cringe.... believe me, I know!) The MSP unfortunately has engine issues as well. AS we all know, Mazda is supposedly working on a fix for that.... :fingers crossed:

As for RADO, he has a Celica in name ONLY. It's a Tube Chassis car with CARBON FIBER body work and a 3SGTE powerplant. It is NOT a Celica.... Fast car, looks like a Celica, but uses NO PARTS out of the current car...

aww the high revving torqueless wonders. screw honda vtec and toyota vvti. gimme boost

Yeah, I'd agree there: the MBC mod is ridiculously easy to do, and makes a BIG difference in power...

But...

it sure was nice to be able to tell the little punks that "No, I don't have Nawws, OR a turbo. This car DOESN'T need them to be fast..." Case in point, I had a couple 10 year olds stop by the house the other day asking if they could "inspect" my car to fins the NOS :lmao: It's almost embarrassing to have to confirm their suspicion that TF&TF is right, and all the fast cars hav at least a turbo, and probably Nitrous too....

So here I am, telling you all the great things about the Celica, but please note: I am driving an MSP.... I loved my Celica, but I like the MSP more (although I wish the swaybar didn't clunk, and I REALLY wish the car had cruise control: until you've driven coast-to-coast without cruise, don't call anyone a pu$$y for wanting it...

Right. enuff rant. :D

i was actually referring to the all-trac. best celica ever made. awesome car. if i had one, damn that thing would be fast. super rare too.

i agree with what you said about the 2zz. it is too touchy. if you rub it wrong, it gets angry. BUT it does do well with a blitz compressor on it...

i said chris rado cuz i thought that if i said "almost no fast celicas" some fool would say chris rado. i'm also gettin a 3SGTE or 4A-GZE for my corolla later this summer. prolly gonna go with the 4A. then the ultimate sleeper is born. :D

stef, i couldn't imagine you with any other car other than the mazdaspeed. :) ;)
