Seat Covers For My 97 Miata

Well the seat covers/uhpolstering for my 97 Miata are becoming quite thin in spots and it is time to seek out covers or new uhpolstering for them. Have any of you folks out there in Miataland had any experience with replacing or recovering your seats? If so, give me some hints and/or suggestions on which direction I should take. I found out that a local shop will charge about $700 to redo the seats I have now. After picking myself up off of the floor I figured it was time to ask The Forum for some help. Thanks

I'll reply by saying that I've never upholstered my seats :D $700 seems like a lot though. If I were you I'd take a look at Craig's list or maybe one of the Mazda specific junk yards out there in CA to see if there are any used seats for sale.

AS a matter of fact WillD, I did find some used seats on CraigsList for $100. I went ahead and purchased them and started to change them out with my existing ones. Unfortunately these "new" seats were from a 1994 model and almost fit. There was one bracket missing on the "new" seats that I couldn't remove from the original ones. I stopped the work and re-installed the old ones, put these "new" ones on Craigslist and sold them the very next day to a enthusiast with a 94 model and they fit perfectly! I still check on CL every day but no luck so far. So that is why I am investigating the covers instead. Thanks for your input sir!

That's is really weird! I was under the impression that all NA/NB seat mounting brackets were the same... What didn't fit if you don't mind my asking?

It wasn't the brackets. On the 97 model, there is a special attachment for the seat belt/shoulder belt that earlier models don't have. In 97 there were a few different things that didn't match other years. One thing was the door bolstering had a bump-out, for the lack of a better description, that never was on any other Miata before or since. It is those little differences that hav made finding parts a challenge sometimes. Now I have a "used" motor without any obvious VIN anywhere! It is a newer year than my original cracked block motor and it runs great! Fixing up this little car is a real fun hobby. Lots of things-to-do on my list. The seat replacement will just have to wait. I am saving my tokens now for some minor body work and new "Brilliant Black" paint job.

Yeah I remember reading about the seat differences now that you mention it.

Thanks to all who responded to my question regarding seat covers for my 97 Miata but after spending the holidays away from home I have yet to find someone with positive info. on where to buy some that don't look a shirt two sizes too big when installed!

Never mind kids, I pulled the trigger and ordered some from GoMiata.com and have my fingers crossed that they will do the job of covering up on tattered and torn original cloth covers. I'll report back later when they arrive.

So....the seat covers from GoMiata arrived and I am really disappointed! They looked OK but the seat portions really don't fit very tight. When you get into the car and sit down, the material shifts / moves along with your butt, making for a lousy fit indeed. It was my hope that they would install tight enough onto the existing covers NOT to move or shift when getting in and out. So I will pack them up and send them back to which they came and continue my quest for a better set. As a byline, these were not that cheap....$145.00! Even though made in America, we seem to have lost the ability to make something that will fit the need better!

That sucks that they didn't work out for you. Keep us updated what you are going to try next.

Well kids, I'm going to put the seat cover issue on the back burner and go for a great ride this weekend. The SJVMC is hosting a ride from Fresno,CA over to Carmel,CA and then down the Route 1 coastline highway to Cambria,CA Should be filled with lots of twisty roads and many Miata enthusiats! Really looking forward to getting out of the hectic traffic of So.Calif. and out onto the central valley and coastal roadways. The weather is supposed to be in the low 70's all weekend with no rain in sight! I guess it is weekends like this in late January that makes life pretty darn good here in Calif., home of fruits and nuts!

As a follow-up to my last posting, we had a wonderful ride through the Central California coastal mountains this last weekend with over 40 Miata's in attendance! Unfortunately, the recent rains had created mudslides onlong the Route 1 coastal portion of our schedule and we were not able to do that beautiful drive. Mother Nature can be a cruel b...h when she wants to be but all and all it was a super weekend in our great cars.I put a couple of red t-shirts over the tired seat backs, ending for now my uhpolstery issue.
