Schedule 1 vs Schedule 2... opinions please

I live in MA... the only one of the following that applies is that they use salt in the winter here.

Repeated short-distance driving
l Driving in dusty conditions
l Driving with extended use of brakes
l Driving in areas where salt or other corrosive materials are used
l Driving on rough or muddy roads
l Extended periods of idling or low-speed operation
l Driving for long periods in cold temperatures or extremely humid climates
l Driving in extremely hot conditions
l Driving in mountainous conditions continually

The manual says that I should be doing my intervals at 5K miles (vs 7.5K) since they use salt in some areas around here in the winter. I've seen a couple of posts about this and would like the opinions of anybody else in the snowbelt.

This just seems excessive for a modern car with synthetic oil (FWIW I posted earlier about my dealer's ahem "special" program to get me in every 3,750 miles).

Thoughts on this?

I think for the sake of the warranty, you are stuck with schedule 2. I completely agree that it seems excessive. Even worse than 5,000 miles is 4 months. It's hard to believe a modern vehicle can't at least go 6 months.

I'm on the same boat as you, been using the 7,500 mile schedule no problems to report. About to go in for the 22,500 mile service in a week.

7.5K miles or 6 months (whatever comes first) intervals on my 2013 CX-5. Not concerned about denial of warranty claims, because not a valid reason to do so in US.

I am in MA as well. I just got my first service done at the four month mark. Not yet sure what I am going to do going forward. I am only worried about any potential warranty implications of not doing it on schedule 2. I also do not see why salt on the road would affect the engine oil, and I haven't dealt with any cars previously having this restriction.

I got offered that 'special' program as well- it doesn't even seem to meet the minimum service requirements for the vehicle.

I'm guessing they think some salt spray off wet/salted roads gets ingested into engine via intake at speed.

And this is true, particularly if you drive through winter slush at high speeds and high throttle openings.

But I agree with CX-SV, if that's all the "severe service" conditions that apply to your driving, Service I (7500 miles) is more than adequate.

What about stop & go traffic driving?
With our other cars we used the 'severe service' schedule, which was 5K/6 months with conventional oil.
It does seem silly to do 4 months on synthetic. I started doing 6 months recently (which gets to about 5K) but don't feel confident with this.

It's normal for a car to do a certain amount of stop and go. I would only consider stop and go as severe service if stop and go predominates highway driving or easy suburban cruising.

Yes, I view "extended periods of idling or low-speed operation" as extensive inner city operation, like driving Manhattan for example. Or taxi cab usage with long periods of idling and waiting.
