Rythmic Brake Clicking

Ever since I crashed (everything is replaced and re-aligned) I have had a rythmic click coming from the front passenger wheel I smashed. I had to replace the pads and rotors, I have those little metal clips that put outward tension on the pads, and have even put lubricant on the metal base clips which helped for a couple days. Was there a shim I was suppose to remove from the old pads and place on the new ones, followed by that adhesive sticky pad they give you with new brake pads so you dont get metal on metal brake piston contact?

haha any ideas on where I f'ed up?

THANKS!

I guess the problem I have is that i never kept the shim off the original brake pad, which should have gone under the new brake pad shim

does anyone know where i can purchase these old shims?

You replaced the rotors; did you get slotted ones? I've heard that they can make a clicking sound.

Prob the wheel bearing making the noise I had a low humm on off on off sort of noise also on my passenger side.Replaced that wheel bearing and also replaced my driver side for the hell of it fixed the problem right away even feels better.Mine also started to make the noise anytime I went over 20mph Since thats the side you hit I'm willing to bet that your wheel bearing is going. On another note I have cross drilled and slotted rotors front and back and they make no noise at all.

i replaced the wheel bearing, steering knuckle, rotor with a pro stop non slotted or drilled. There seems to be excessive space between the rotor and caliper, even when the brake is pushed in. My guess is that the caliper bent when i crashed, and now the piston wont push out far enough to make a snug grip, causing the loose rotor or brake pads (not sure which) to click when presser is put on the brake

i will upload an audio clip

cant get the audio clip from my cell to upload to the computer in the right format. I will take a video tomorrow so you can hear the ridiculous chatter. This is causing excessive brake dust and id like to correct the problem asap so my rotor isnt completely F'ed

Well I have cross-drilled and slotted rotors, and that makes a clicking noise when the brake pressure is applied. I know if you don't have the retaining clip in your calipers, it will make almost like a metal clapping sound when you apply the brake. Also if the caliper was warped and not holding the pad as it should, that could do it to.

BUT our brakes are designed to push a pad to the rotor and shove the rotor to the other pad behind it, so it sound like the pads are loose and wobbling around. Do you know if the caliper was replaced? It could be weak and not holding like it should.

It honestly sounds like you need to replace your caliper(s), and I say that because after so many years, it's a good idea to replace them all anyways. I bought all 4 of mine, had time to brush paint them and they're a cinch to install. Cost about 500 altogether to replace all 4 calipers.

I did all the work on my car, so no the caliper on the crashed tire was not replaced. I know how the caliper works, i do have the retaining clips installed. and the noise you described is pretty spot on. just sounds like CLAP CLAP CLAP CALP CLAAAAP. what calipers from the other mazdas are compatible with mine? or am i better off just buying an OEM from the dealer? ( i get a 10% discount from the local dealer)

I use it as a personal point never to buy used items, because you just never know what someone did to it or how they treated it. The refurb/new ones are cheap enough to just buy right out of the store IMO.

I had a lapse of sanity when I changed my brake pads the time before last. I could not get the piston to go all the way back into the caliper, so I replaced the caliper (not realizing that i left the retaining clip on my old caliper). I turned my old caliper in as a core deposit and bought the caliper and installed it.

Obviously when I installed the brakes w/o the retaining clip, it would make the metal on metal clapping sound when I pressed on the brake, when I let off the brake, when I turned....etc. it was by NO MEANS a quiet noise. I can say with much certainty that if you replace that caliper, you fix your problem.

Now see your problem is when you let off the brake, which i understand why it would cause clapping. My noise only happens when i put even the slightest pressure on the brake, which is why i think my caliper is bent to the point of no return. I have the brake caliper bolted up with a pneumatic ratchet, and the caliper wont even hold the rotor tight in place, i can wiggle the rotor on the studs with the caliper completely mounted!

sorry if im rambling, I put a thread in the WTB section and i got a couple PM's so hopefully I will have a NEW caliper shipped to my door soon
