Rust removal on muffler?

So I know that the best way to remove rust is sanding. It's what I did on my calipers before I painted them.

But the thing is .. I have rust on my muffler, due to the bad quality of my old exhaust. The piece that held my muffler in place previously was NOT made of stainless steel -- it now is -- but the damage has been done down the one side of the muffler.

Is there ANY way to go about removing the rust from my muffler without sanding? I don't want to scratch the hell out of my muffler, but .. I don't know of any chemical treatments that can get rid of the rust without damaging anything else.

:(

email the guys on trucks (horsepower TV). They had a chemical bath that removes rust without damaging the actual part itself. Or go on powerblocktv.com and see if you can find it somewhere.

just how bad...is it surface rust or has it started to penetrate the metal itself..? any pics??

mine had a bit of surface rust too, take steel wool, it works, even make it a little wet, it's alot easier on the metal than sand paper, then after that you can hand buff it, should look sweet again

i use "never dull" it's like a step befor stell wool...works great for minor dulling and rust

It's just surface rust -- definitely not through the muffler. I believe that the rust I'm seeing isn't actually FROM the muffler itself. I think it's 'runoff' rust that washed down from the previous non-stainless mount, that held the muffler in place. But now, y'know, it's stuck on the muffler.

I'll see if I can get some pics after classes tomorrow.

ya, maybe the "never dull" will work for you...? it can't hurt...the steel wool might also, but use a real fine grade for sure!

Start with the least aggressive method. I would start with a chrome/metal polish with a MF towel. If it is just surface that should do the trick. Anything more aggressive you will run the risk of scratches. Let us know how it goes.
