2003.5 Mazdaspeed
Hi every1... I live in Canada, i am about to buy a 2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protege.. The dealer is promoting me to the rust protection which cost like 900 bucks CAN, should i add it.. Will the car rust out on me years later?? As you know we have hash winter here in canada with lots of salt on the ground... well did you guys add this protection.. they also have the sound shield, paint shield.. are the worth it or useless???

the paint and interior pretection is total bullsh!t... dont let them sucker you into it. the engine bay spray is useless too because they do a terrible job

the only thing i recommend is the undercarriage black tar spray but rather than doing it at the dealer do it either yourself or take it to a good shop to do. the dealer will do a terrible job... DO NOT GET IT DONE THERE

You do not need any of this crap. Keep your car washed, touch up any scratches that get through the paint and you won't see rust for many, many, many years.

Ya I was actually relieved when the dealer and "finance manager" didn't try to sell me anything except for lojack. I was preparing myself to say no to everything i thought they would try to sell me on (underbody protection, blah blah blah) and but they made the whole deal a painless operation. And we have winter too in NJ, so there might be a reason they didn't offer it to me.

Hey I live in Alberta... What protection you get is up to you... but I highly advise to not get any type of paint protection. Most of this stuff is garbage, especially the one where it smooths out your paint to make it brighter. What this does is turn regular "orange peel" paint (which you can barely tell) from the factory into totally smooth paint by melting your clearcoat down smooth. What this will do is not allow you to wax your car... without the divits in the "orange peel" of the paint the wax cannot stick.

Wash your car every week to two weeks, and wax your car with carnuba every month and you should be fine... you dont have to spend all day on the wax... just a nice coat for protection. Carnuba will wash off... its not the same as teflon, where teflon will stay on for a few months.

And as other members say, keep your scratches and chips in check with touch up paint.

The other good thing to get is a quality 3M plastic hood protection.. either the 12" or 18" width.

IMO
enjoy the car

I'm also in Alberta and got the underbody spray when I got my car. I figured out what the price was if I got done myself which was $300 and used that to negotiate with the dealer. $900 seems way too much. Ditto on the paint and interior protection packages, a complete waste of time. For the interior, just go to Canadian Tire and buy a can of Scotchgard for about $12 and you're set. Hope that helps.

Has anyone actually used scotch guard on their cars? I was wondering if anyone has seen any fading, discoloration caused by its use? The warnings on the can make me a bit nervous.
