Rust - and lots of it

2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protege Blazing Yellow
Hey everyone. I've owned quite a few Proteges in my life. Starting with a 2000 w/ 173k, a 2001 w/ 140k (that I turned a profit of $1500), a 2002 w/ 223k and finally a 2003 Mazdaspeed w/ 233k!

So, needless to say I've seen quite a bit of rust. All surprisingly (lol), on the rear wheel wells.

When I found my most recent Protege, there was very little rust that you could see. Only one side of the car you could actually see the brown spot. The other side, no spots at all.

Now, like most of you guys, you hate to see rust on any of your vehicles. Let alone a car that will never again be produced, like our beloved Mazdaspeed Proteges.

So here's what I did. I took a die-grinder to any rust I could see. That means grinding down to the most bare metal possible without going through the body. I then taped off all around the car and used black rockerguard to coat the bare metal and any spots that I took the grinder to. It doesn't look the absolute prettiest, but I think it'll do.

Here's my question. With two coats of this rockerguard ($6 a can at crappytire) on all the fenders and underneath the wheel wells, will this stop the rust from spreading? Essentially my idea is to smother the rust and eliminate the oxygen it needs to oxide the metal.

Please, feel free to share your ideas on this topic and post pictures of your solution to the rust on these precious cars!

There are several threads that cover this topic in detail as well as many build threads of other people that have to repair rust as you do. Good luck, i'm fortunate to not have to worry about rust.

There must be some archive threads somewhere... I see there are over 2000 threads under appearance but only 5 when I click the link? Otherwise I would have viewed one of those...
