RPM drops when I use A/C

i've notice lately when i set my cruise control at 3000 rpm and turn on the a/c, the rpm will drop down to about 2700 for a few seconds and come back up moments later.
anyone know what might be causing this?

AC comes on, more load on the engine, speed drops... cruise applies more throttle, speed increases.

thanks for the replies,
the speed didn't seemed to drop or increase, just the rpm.
it doesn't always happen, just once in a while.

The reason the revs drop, like other up above said before, is because the A/C system puts more strain on the altenator, thereby drawing away from the power that the cruise control was using. I honestly wish that there was a higher capacity altenator out for our cars so that the car would behave the same both with the A/C on and off.

Sad to say... but using the back to the Future reference, no matter how awesome that was, is showing your age... and mine to because I totally got it. Thanks, made me laugh good and hard.

You realize though that the A/C is driven off of the engine, right? And that having a bigger / better / whatever alternator wouldn't really do anything for a/c compressor on / off, right? Having a bigger / better engine would help minimize that (same draw, but a lower percentage of total power 'used'), but alas we're stuck with 2.0L of FS-DE fury!

if you're really bothered by it, get an underdrive pulley. It'll still draw from the engine, but not as bad. It'll free up hp in the low end, too :)

Does the UDP really make a difference in regards to the the A/C? And considering that our A/C systems are already pretty poor does the UDP make the A/C not as cold?

the a/c is less cold. I haven't used it much this year yet. But for me, I still get enough cold air on 2 - I rarely if ever feel the need to go to 3 or 4 (though I have had to in the past).

I'm assuming this is an automatic car? I don't think it happens in a manual as I never noticed it.

One solution would be the atx > mtx swap.

yeah mine's an auto. hmm udp $150, tranny swap $1,000+. udp 1.5 hours, tranny swap 15+.

I think I'll stick w/the udp for now. Though tranny swap would be so nice!
