Rough Idle and Stalling on MSP

So, I washed my car today and cleaned some of the engine parts too. That means that I had some water soak the CAI filter. Now I wasn't dumb enough to drive it immediately after, but I do think I may have drove it while it may have been a little wet. I waited about 2 hours.

Now, my question is, would this be the cause of the rough idle and black smoke coming out of my exhaust? I drove it around the block and punched it a little bit and all of a sudden it started to idle crazy and stalled out. When I checked under the hood, all my connections looked good. Then I noticed that it was spitting black soot out of the exhaust when I restarted the car. Now the car idles so rough its ridiculous.

I'm an idiot for forgetting that it takes a little longer to have a filter dry then with a stock box. My mods are SMIC, Greddy Type S, hardpipes, Injen CAI. The car was running like a champ until this evening.

I'm not really sure where to check next since all the connections look good. Any suggestions? Hopefully its nothing serious, but I'm not sure where to start......

Hmm....no CEL on the car.....just really crappy idle....

Can I pull the spark plugs and see if there is water in there? Also, I tried to feel around on the inside of the filter -> MAF pipe for water but couldnt....

Maybe I should try and take things off and check them out. I guess I'm hoping I didnt jack something up too much....:)

i don't think it is your filter. you would have to dump the whole filter in water for it to suck up enough water to cause damage. i've run a CAI in the winter when i lived in Toronto and it was fine. it was super dirty with crap all over it, but it was fine. yeah, check your plugs and see if there is any water in there.

So, I pulled one of the spark plugs out and man...its burnt to a crisp.

Another thing I noticed was that it reaked like fuel when I started the engine. I mean overwhelming amounts of fuel smell. That cant be normal. I'm thinking that maybe my ECU is not putting the right mixture together.

Maybe it has something to do with this:

all 4 spark plugs were burnt like that? i suggest getting all new plugs.

if only 1 or 2 plugs were like that, then the rough idle and stalling could be due to cylinder misfire. the cyinders where your plugs were all burned up were most likely not burning the the air/fuel mixture properly....

i'm surprised no CEL came on. install 4 new plugs and see if it runs better.

Well, I had some spare plugs and installed them.....reset the ECU...and same thing. I wonder what the hell it could be.

Idle goes from about 1000 RPM and drops down to almost 0. Then you hear this hissing noise under the hood the whole time and even after the engine turns off. Man..I'm stumped. I checked everything.

I wonder what happened after pushing the car like that. It happened when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear.

Any other suggestions? Thanks.

If you have the stock pipes, make sure the nipples didn't break off the pipes.

I have Turbohoses hardpipes and am running both the stock BPV and a Greddy BOV. I checked both the BPV and BOV and the lines on them are good.

If the MAF did get wet it more than likely damaged it. However I would exhaust all options before I started replacing things. Give everything a good tug to ensure everything is still hooked up and has a good connection.

unhook your maf. that will cause a cel. if the car idles a bit better (it wont be a good idle at all compared to stock) but if its better than what your current idle is then i think you may need to find a new maf. also i dont know if its the case, but if you sucked up enough water to hit the turbo compressor, that could do some not nice stuff I would imagine....$$$.... or it could be a vac leak so go check and tell us what happend. could be nothing.

this is scary cause im having the same trouble with my boosted MP5. i changed one of my coolent hoses out and now my car is stumbling and stalling as well. i checked all my hoses and no leaks or anything either.

Dang....the "$$$" thing doesnt sound good.... I'm gonna go check everything out. Be back in a little....

If I have to replace something that costs alot.....man...my wife will kill me .. :)

What all did you take off to wash? just your injen? Did you put your temp sensor back in? Maf on in the correct direction (as the arrow), same with BPV. Check all of your vacuum hoses (that is an obvious cause of vacuum leak). Don't just look at them. If you have the rubber hoses with those crummy stock crimp connectors they will crack and come off easily. It's not something expensive. You would have to dump water down your intake to hydrolock your car. Some sitting water won't do anything.

Well, I'm an idiot... after closer inspection, I noticed that the IC -> TB pipe had just barely come loose on the back side. I got that when I reinstalled some of the components....

I had checked all the lines once, but just kind of tugged on them. I guess I need to be a little more careful. Thanks for all the help.

Usually is something simple. Glad to hear you found it!
