87 mazda RX-7
i have just bought a 87 mazda Rx-7 for $600, the problem is that i have no idea how to work on it, it fluters real bad, i dont know how or what to do, can you help me? (bang)

Flutters as in.....? At idle or while you are driving? Is there smoke coming out of the exhaust? A really good source of info on rotories is rx7club.com. :D

I would love to have an old Rx-7...but as you...I dont know how to work on a rotary either.

Rotary is one of the easiest engines to work on. 3 rotating parts and a few valves. The problem is getting all the s*** off the actual rotor assy. :D

it smokes about 6000 rpm and at start up, it flutters at idle or when i come to a stop

I don't know alot about the FC (2nd gen. model), which is what you have. But:
Blue smoke = burning oil
White smoke (steam) = coolant = probably internal coolant seals
Black smoke = fuel = running rich = tuning/fuel issue

Check both the oil and coolant for any signs of cross-contamination.
The idle may be something minor but possible causes are too many to list.
Depending on what color of smoke, I might just start with a minor tune-up, new plugs and wires. Run some GOOD (Chevron is what I use) fuel system/injector cleaner through it.
FWIW, this site has the factory service manual available for your car.

Good luck :)

could be a vacuum line or vacuum leak causing a strange idle. alot of rotaries smoke so thats not unusual. how does it feel power wise?

the power is great. ill just say when i went to grab 3rd gear i spun the tires, but when i stop at an idle it fluters between 1000 and 2500 rpm's

(hand) Well duh.....
The Captain's right, check all your vac lines. Not sure what I was thinking, Sorry.

it's the timing.....it shakes around 2000rpms and it kicks out smoke when you step on it (looks like timing problem), also see your catalic converters (the car was probably sitting for a long time before you bought it)...
