Though I would share my snow experience since its been all the fuss lately.
The past weekened we got owned witha 3 day blizzard. Started 2:00 friday afternoon and didnt stop until sometime after 7:00pm sunday night.
Friday night I drove home, grabbed my skis and headed out into to brave the elements. Saturday I spend the whole day driving around Worcester MA. The roads where a mess, some not even plowed. Worcester has some huge hills too, like the one I live on.
Sunday I took a lady friend skiing, again in the snow storm.
And my experience? My lil red hatch rocked the snow like the snow was its b****! I had total control, didn't get stuck once. Obviously there was a little sliding here and there, but the car handled like a dream considering the conditions. I had to bust through a few snow banks too, specifically coming into my driveway where we were plowed in. Car got stuck for a second, but I threw it in reverse and rocked it out with no problem. This snow bank was about 2ft deep. Made it down streets, and my driveway where the snow came up past the bottom of the car. My old taurus would have been stuck on these streets for a week, but not my little speed3. Better then any car I have had in the snow before to be honest.
To give a comparison, my mother's taurus got stuck, as well as my father's KIA Suv (rear wheel), even when things were plowed.
At the mountain where I was skiing, alot of people were getting stuck int eh parking lot, which wasn't plowed. I was able to pull out without eving having to rock the car.
The only hill I couldn't make it up, was the one I live on. So I had to approach it from the other side. To put that in perspective however, they cant use plows on our street, because they slide and loose control. They use a giant bulldozer with chains on the wheels, and I have even seen that slip once or twice. Going down hill looked like it was going to be scary, but I dropped it into first and made it down to my driveway with no problems.
Im running 16 inch Sunny brand 'Snowmasters'! (They have lil snow flakes patterns in the side walls) I was going for blizzaks but the guy at the tire store said they aren't good if you do alot of highway driving because they wear down fast. He recomended the Sunny brand. At first i was sketched out, but they seemed ok. My final opinion of them is they kick some serious ass. Im sure there are better tires out there, but bang vs buck these seem pretty good.
Oh and this is my first time driving stick in the snow, and I love it.
My only complaint? My car is caked in snow. I can't read either of my plates, and the rear bumper collects alot of snow and ice, makeing it a pain to open the hatch. That and I got ice built up on the inside of my rims, and it has thrown my tire balance waaaaaaaaaaayyy off. Im hoping that will melt away today.
