On my way to work this morning I had a very strange encounter with a purple pontiac aztek, driven by a ~40ish year old lady...
I was driving on the frontage road parallel to the interstate (freshly paved, and quite curvy for ~9 miles or so) and came upon this aztek thing. I was going ~50 mph in a 45 zone, while she might have been going 30 in the same area. By her driving style, I would have first guessed she was either very drunk, or had no arms. She would gradually go into the oncoming lane, and then swerve really hard back into the proper lane. Scary stuff. Anyways, I decided to pass before the road got curvy, and while I still had a nice clear oncoming lane to do so. Anyways, I downshift to second, and go WOT pulling around her quickly and non-offensively. Well, I as a pass, I notice she is on the cell phone, and applying makeup with both hands at the same time.
At any rate, she looks over as I pass with the biggest Go to hell look I have ever seen, and tosses all that s*** she's holding into the passenger side. Within 5 seconds of passing this lady, she is riding my ass, within a foot from the rear of my car, maybe less...
She's flashing her high beams, flipping me off, and banging on the steering wheel... Anyways, by now we are near two very nice curves on the frontage road. Both freshly paved, with the first curve a sweeping right hander, with a sharp unbanked turn back to left... followed by a hard right hander banked really well, that striaghtens back out almost immediately (has a 15mph sign posted) to the regular frontage road.
At the start of the 1st curve, the aztek whips into the left lane as if to pass, then swerves right back behind me about half way into the curve, I accelerate moderately, just enough to open about 1 car length between my car and the pontiac. By the end of the first turn she is taking up both lanes trying to keep up. In the ~100 yards between the end of that curve and the start of the second, I got WOT in third gear, reaching something in the neighborhood of 70MPH, she is now probably 4 carlengths behind me, also at WOT I imagine.
At the start of the 2nd curve, I brake hard and to a really nice rev-matched dowshift to second and damn near drift into the curve perfectly... she is in the oncoming lane swerving hard enough to make her passenger side tires go off the road when she gets back in our lane. I continue to pull very hard through the curve and exit the curve (at the 15 mph sign) at the top of second gear somewhere around 50mph. By now I have increased the gap to ~6 carlengths, but she is still coming. As I reach the next straight stretch, I look back just in time to see her round the 15 mph curve, almost on two wheels, and slide completely off the road between the interstate and the frontage road... off into some recently grated dirt. I couldn't see much for the dust other than the aztek was still intact and didn't seem to be damaged. I slowed down long enough to see dirt flying out from her front wheels spinning, trying to get back on the road.
At any rate, I called the sherriff's dept. when I got here at work to report her. I still can't decide what pissed her off so bad.
Just road rage I guess... Sorry so long, but I figured I would share my krappy commuting story...
