ripping the tweeters from a coax system?

hi
i got a 5x7 infinity coax in the front.. i would like to know if anybody has experience ripping off / deinstalling the tweeters from the speaker and installing it elsewhere...

It can be done, my boy did it with is alpine type r 6.5 coaxils speakers. I gave him an extra type r component set crossover I had laying around the shop and used it with it and it sounds great.

If your'e talking about simply ghetto-rigging a set of coax's to seperate the tweeter. It COULD be done, but the real benefit of a set of components is the crossover, not necc. off-axis tweeter mounting. Infact, I'm currently pretty sure that I'm going to be mounting my components coax-style eventhough I'm building kickpanels for them.

I REALLY wouldn't consider any part of doing this worthwhile, or warrenty-friendly. Infact I've popped a couplefew tweeters off of blown speakers that the infinity rep has screwdrivered. First off, infinity uses interlocking shapes +glue, so doing it cleanlymight not happen. half the time I pull the wires off of the tweeter. and you'll be left with an un-plugged ugly center post that you'd need to find some way to cap.

Basically, I've got experience in messing with them, and I understand what you're trying to achieve, and I'd say that on both fronts this isn't the best plan.

the infinity do have a crossover (see my sig) and lead to 4 plugs at the back of the speaker (2 for tweeter,2 for woofer)... so splitting the frequencies doesnt seem to be a problem. warranty for the speakers is long gone and i have another pair of exactly the same speakers, so i can afford to try a little this and that...

my question rather pointed to the "locking"/installation of the tweeter on the woofer part of the speaker..that would be my biggest problem...
the fact that the missing tweeter would leave a "hole" in the woofer is not important since the speakers are behind the original door panel anyway (=invisible)

can you help me to get the tweeters off without damaging the speaker?

the hole is not a matter of cosmetics, it's a amatter of speaker function. it severely compromises the sound. think of it like sitting a speaker on the floor. you'll have sound off of the back of the speaker coming back through the hole. This severly compromises your midrange/midbass responce.

I'm quite familiar with kappas as I've sold them and still deal with them quite regularly. Actually I've got a pair in my car right now to get me by while I build my kicks. and yes they've got an external crossover-like thingy (not really a true full crossover, but atleast it's something) Again, the tweeters don't simply jsut disconnect, there is a interlocking design+alot of sometimes strong glue holding things together, generally it blows up the housing when you try to break the tweeter off. I'd honestly say it's kind of a roll of the dice. we went through 3pairs of kappa's to try to get one good set of tweeters for a friend to try a heavily attenuated very high crossedover imaging-supertweeter setup. The other thing is the amount of prying we're doing sometimes cracks the baskets, etc, AND we've got the extra leverage of being able to push aside/rip the screwdrivered cones but again this never matters since these are blown/warrentied/destroyed speakers we're dealing with.

I know precisely what you're wanting to do, and have done it (albeit for different reasons) and again there's NO benefit in doing this, and you're only risking messing things up pretty severly and there's no real gain to be had by moving the tweeter elsewhere. Hell, if you weren't in germany, I'd send you a couple pryed off tweeters... Beyond that, kappa tweeters are notoriously harsh. if you want to say sail-panel mount them that will only exaggerate this. Andother problem you're going to have is in mounting the tweeters. there's no real way short of gluing to mount the tweeter.

If you're deadset on doing it, have at it. I really don't even know what kind of advice in accomplishing it to give you. I'll see if we've got any blown kappas floating around, perhaps some new metalheads have cranked their gains again...

and dont current infinity offerings give you some tweeter aiming anyways?

hm i get the point...
question is how i can solve my problem.. the tweeters in the doors get dull when people are sitting in the car... so i must do something about it... what could i do? i'd like to keep the kappas in the doors, but it would be nice to mount some other nice tweeters elsewhere in the front... so is there some simple way to accomplish that task?
i heard using random xovers would sound bad and i don't know if the speakers don't get problems with random xovers and allthat :\

ryan:yes, the tweeters have some little axis offset and can be turned 359degress..but that's not really enough when people are sitting in the car :\

you could use active crossovers, and an extra set of quality tweets, placed in the sail panels, or on the a-pillars to raise the stage... but its tricky to get imaging perfect and transparent... they'd also have to tonally match whats already there.

mhm active crossovers?stuff like this:?

o well, that's going to be a lot of money and how could i find some nice tweeters which fit the sound of the kappas and all that? i hate car-audio (freak)

what exactly would happen if i just bought some tweeters and wired them to the tweeter output of the kappa's xover?
and what would happen if i split the cable of the xover's tweeteroutput and wired an additional pair of tweeters to them?

So basically you want to turn your set of coaxials into a set of components....why not just buy a set of components?

2 reasons:
1)didnt see any good/inexpensive 5x7 or 6x8 component set..
2)don't want to spend too much additional money, it must end somewhere, i already spent too much imho...i know, my audio components are not the best, but i have to watch my purse these days :\

Did you ask around before buying your 5x7s? You can easily fit 6.5" speakers in a 5x7 mounting location and when you go to a 6.5" there are plenty of options.

i bought the kappas a long time ago and people seemed satisfied with it...well.ahm.. i could try gettings some 6 or 6,5" component set and try to build some bracket for it but as i said, i don't want to spend another 150+$ or so..

i'm looking through ebay right now, there are plenty of tweeters (phonocar, boston acc, soundstream etc...) how do i know what input (watts) etc i can take? can i somehow read this from the kappa's data?

My honest opinion is that you are not going to be happy until you do have a true set of components. You could go and rip up your current speakers or install a set of tweeters but its not going to sound great. Sell your current stuff on ebay (you said you had two sets) and use that money to buy a $150-300 set of components.

tweets themselves usually dont take much power... passive crossovers eat up a bunch of the power that would otherwise go to them in a component setup.

thx for the link (for a moment i had forgotten it was a 6x8 hole O)

well, i know i should listen first to the things i intend to buy, but it's mostly not possible, because the local dealers just hook up a few different brands etc... they suck 8(
the mivocs ... i will give them a chance to please me ^^ and if i don't need the kappas anymore, i could win some money 8-)

update:
i actually sold the used 5x7 inf set and a buddy sent me the other brand new set (had forgotten it at his place long time ago)...
guess what: i opened up the brand new box and the tweeter of one speaker was loose. 2 small plastic chips fell out of the hole in the middle of the speaker and i have no chance installing the tweeter back on the speaker because the hole around the tweeter is too small to put the clips back in...

i cannot sell this thing, what can i do ? i can't even reach down the tweeter dome to cut the 2 small wires which hold the tweeter in place... FARK
