Resuming Playback with 2014 CX-5 GT Tech Stereo and other issues

I was informed today that the module is ordered and will be there in 2 to 3 weeks, so let's just wait and see. Remember addabox that I have been at this for a long time, that I kept the logs and service numbers and have spoken with Mazda at length. True, I was almost giving up, and expected the call today to be another excuse. I'll keep the forum posted, for what it is worth they are just replacing it with a similar failing module...

Well, like I say, I would love to be proven wrong and I'll salute you if your persistence pays off.

I have not had to endure the years of this issue as other posters but it seems there finally might be a partial fix as per the Mazda6 forum European TSB.

I didn't read the whole thread, but the page you linked to is just a letter from Mazda service saying that a European TSB is not applicable to US models, and then the usual "we do updates from time to time so who knows, maybe it'll get fixed, we value our customers" etc.

Same problem here with the usb playback, it's gets annoying when there are many songs on the usb. I hope we get a fix for this

I am in Guelph, Ontario - car was purchased at Kieswetter in Kitchener. They take customer satisfaction very serious, if you get to talk to the service manager.

Small world. I'm in Mississauga, yet I also bought my CX-5 from Kieswetter Motors in Kitchener back in February (sales rep was Raymond Gray). Very happy with the service I received from Kieswetter and all the staff were very friendly. However, in regards to the resume play issue with the USB....I'm not holding my breath that it will be fixed (for our vehicle model years) anytime soon. I will believe it when I see it.

I've now accepted the USB as it is.

But I've changed the USB stick for a smaller capacity and it now only has around 100 songs on it.
I've also found that turning the RHS radio knob will scroll through the song list quite quickly, not sure if this is in the manual.

You mean turning the radio frequency knob will quickly scroll through songs on the USB? I did not know this, will have to test it out.

European models are being replaced their Bluetooth module (USB issues and slowness culprit). Some Spanish people are reporting that issues have been solved.
Mazda is replacing the BT module for affected people that claim for it. (And reported to be affected by a TSB)

BT module is removed and replaced by a reprogrammed one. The old bt module is sent back to be reprogrammed and to be mounted later into a other affected client.

The replacing operation is reported to last 30mins...

Original post:

Saludos

"Finally I have the updates BT module installed. It works exactly as described in the tsb. It remembers the song that was playing before and resumes it the next time the car is started and user switches the USB tab on.
Lasts less time on reading USB songs. Tsb explains that 30secs are needed. I could say that it lasted the half of that 30secs. It is needed to -pair the phone again with the unit and download the contacts...but there was non problem on doing it. The rest of functions work in the same way as before the bt module update."

I only collected my new CX-5 about 4 weeks ago (July 2014) and have been back and forth through this forum and with my local Mazda dealer and UK customer services (0345 748 4848).

Good news, I spoke to customer services (11th Aug 2014), and they've confirmed that the new USB part to fix this issue (slow to read and memory of last song being played) is now available and will be provided to me free of charge. I was advised to contact the dealer and get them to order the part in, which they have done. I don't have a fitting date yet but I'm really hoping this fixes the USB playback issues, as otherwise I'm really happy with the CX-5.

I hope this is the fix everyone is hoping for and it's made available to all countries.

Good to know Alister - My module is on order, my dealer has now confirmed it will be here around August 26 and they will call to have my car for about an hour. Finally after months of complaining and tracking the issues and calling to the point that I almost gave up....

So I'm hoping the idea is to roll out the fix in smaller markets to make sure everything works/get the workflow established, then release for North America when all their ducks are in a row. Otherwise Mazda just inexplicably hates the US (in that they also sell us lower specced models with less utility), which is odd considering it's their most important market. WTF, Mazda?

Nice! Did you have to call the Mazda Bluetooth line to troubleshoot & open a case number? My dealer insists that their hands are tied, that the customer has to complain there for anything to happen with the Bluetooth module in any Mazda car in Canada. Same experience on your side?

It's not that they hate us, per se. It's just that the US market and the number of vehicles sold are so big that might become too expensive to fix all the cars.

I've seen the same thing from Honda a couple of years ago. There was an issue on the oil jet bolts in the S2000 engine that led to insufficient lubrication under certain driving conditions. They redesigned the bolts (four holes instead of two) and used those in all newly-manufactured cars, but the TSB was only issued outside the US. I guess their cost/benefit analysis was that given the number of engines involved, it was cheaper in the US to pay for a couple of engine replacements (given that only a small number of people would actually drive their cars in a way that would cause the issue) than replacing the bolts in all cars.

I had called Mazda and had the case open with the dealer as well. I relayed all information to the dealer and if they tell you their hands are tied you need to find another dealer for they are not telling the truth. I will see if I can get a copy of the document my service manager printed off to help everyone here. I have had many calls with Mazda about the infotainment unit and even wrote to the MTO (Ministery of Transportation in Ontario) about the functionality which seemed to have helped somewhat. Listen, in Ontario we are not allowed to even touch our mobile devices (for all the good reasons) and Bluetooth is so important, if I were to get caught with the device in my hands I could sue Mazda for not fixing my Bluetooth for the phone I am using is in the compatibility list. Also it is of course stupid to even consider using the phone in the car while driving. Sometimes I cannot pull off so I will have to let it go to voice-mail and call the number back later. From what I gather this module itself is the part that will also fix many other issues with the USB and iPod streaming.

So....I called Mazda Canada today from work and explained that some folks in other countries seem to be getting their USB issues resolved (resume play)....and asked WTF Mazda Canada was doing about it. They transferred me over to the "Hands Free Department"....and I was told that they knew nothing about any fix....and I was told to contact my dealership. So, I called Keiswetter Mazda in Kitchener, where I bought my CX-5 in February....spoke to someone named Wayne in the Service Dept....and I was told he was not aware of any fix. In fact, Wayne told me that he wished there was a fix because he drives a CX-5 and the resume play issue drives his wife bonkers.

So, there ya go. Looks as though we are being messed with (at least here in Canada).

Same old same old. Hope flares anew and it turns out its nothing. I just hope the rumored redesigned head unit in the 16 models fits ours, and fixes the issues. Be worth it to me.

Ask for Dave and tell him that you have the problem with the bluetooth module. This module is linked to the USB and voice recognition, I know it sounds far out but maybe read also the links I put in the forum a couple of pages back, or wait until I got mine installed and can report back if the issues are fixed, should be in less than 2 weeks now. Also I have found that talking to a dealer on the phone will put a barrier in between that allows them to ignore you. I know it is a drive for you from Toronto, maybe see them in person once we get some more traction on this. I have also found that persistence does pay off in the end. Sounds silly that we have to go through all this trouble just to get - in my opinion - a normal working device in a car that we all paid around 30k for new. I had options and I never should have let my wife drive it I think now... (shocked).

Addabox... is your glass always half empty? I understand that there is no end in sight for this issue and really I am trying my best to keep a positive attitude - maybe also write to some people that "tested" this car (like motormouth, thefastlane etc.) and explain there that you made the choices based on their tests of the car.

I gave Wayne my tel# and asked him to check into it and call me back (though I don't expect to be getting a call). If you are getting the update, I will wait until you report back here. Personally, I don't think the module update will solve the USB resume play. I know there was a infotainment module update for the 2013/2014 models that was not needed for the 2014.5 model (which is what mine is) because the 2014.5 model already had the module update included from factory...and it does nothing for the USB resume play. Perhaps your update is a newer one that does address the USB resume play....but I'm not holding my breath. I as told the dealership today, I spent 40K on my CX-5 that I would not have spent had I known about this issue beforehand (shame on me for not doing my research beforehand).

Very interested to see what happens after your update. Please let us know how things work out.

Bon
