Yeah, it's not such a big deal on a long drive, but if you just drive a few minutes to the store, run in the store and come back out to start that same damn song again...UGH! I even tried putting a "blank" MP3 with the file name of 0000.mp3 (to make it the first track) so it would at least play nothing until I select the track I want, but the unit didn't seem to recognize the blank track. I've found that the best thing to do is just keep it in shuffle mode (but of course it doesn't save that setting either).
Man, I was going to do this exact same thing later this week. Did you actually make an mp3 with a few minutes of silence or is it literally a file named 0000.mp3?
