Report: Toyota Prius minivan coming in 2011

Spy Shots: Are you the Toyota Prius minivan?

Even though we've been hearing various rumblings across the interwebs for quite some time now that Toyota was hard at work crafting a mini-minivan version of its popular Pruis hybrid hatchback, it always helps assuage the skeptics when spy shots start to show up. And that's exactly what we have here.

Toyota's next swagger wagon appears to share its basic aerodynamic wedge-like profile with the well-known Prius, but the entire greenhouse seems to have been moved up and forward a few inches, taking on an airier feeling in the process. We don't see any evidence of sliding doors, so we'll have to assume (for now) that the Prius minivan will use four normal swinging portals.

Rumors indicate this machine, which may be called the Prius Alpha, will sport three rows and offer seating for seven. The spy shooter suggests that the MPV is roughly the size of a Mazda5, which we'd guess is just about right. Power will likely come from a version of the Prius hatchback's four-cylinder hybrid powertrain, possibly with the addition of lithium ion batteries to improve mileage and may even allow for more electric-only propulsion opportunities. Look for it to hit the market around 2012.

Toyota Prius MPV to debut at Detroit Auto Show

Recently, Toyota teased its second addition to the Prius family during its 10th anniversary party for the automaker's infamous hybrid. Now, Toyota has tweeted that the new vehicle, which obviously takes the shape of a Mazda5-sized MPV, will make its official debut at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show in January.

Rumors have suggested that the Prius MPV will offer seating for seven via three rows of perches, though there's no word on whether or not the larger Prius variant will use sliding doors or stick to a more Kia Rondo-like shape. Expect the Prius' powertrain to be slightly revised for MPV duty, as well, probably with a few more lithium-ion batteries on hand to keep things extremely economical. We'll know more come January, but for now, click past the jump to see a video of the Prius MPV's teaser billboard coming to life.

Looks like a Prius that swallowed another Prius...If / When Mazda drops a SkyActiv engine and tranny into the Mazda5...I wouldn't be surprised if it gets similar or better MPG than the Privan...Add to that better styling and the fact it will be fun to drive...Why even waste time considering that toaster on wheels?

Actually, Toyota and Jenny Craig got together on this: It won't go anywhere unless the total occupancy weight is less than 300 lbs.

Looks nice and it's quite possible that it would be offered with manual transmission. Like the Ford C-Max, this will raise awareness of the market.

The Mazda5 will be fine, it will be priced thousands less than this, or the Ford C-Max.

I can see Toyota grafting the 3rd row seats from the RAV4 onto this. It would make a lot of sense, more so than a regular Prius. If Toyota had release this sooner it would have sold like hotcakes, but the next gen of gasoline engines will give hybrids a good fight.
