Silver 2002 Mazda Protege LX
I have a 2002 Protege LX 2.0 (I think) with 108k miles. Im ready to replace the timing belt. Is the 2.0 engine an interference or non-interference timing belt. Is it easy to replace it yourself? How long would it take? Or is it better to pay a mechanic to do it? Thanks.

I hear that it is an interference engine. Not too sure about anything else (my expertise is in the engines with no timing belts lol), but I do know that while you are changing the timing belt, might as well change out the water pump as well since it will be off.

No! No! No! NON-INTERFERENCE!!! Sorry, I'm just sick of all the misinformed parts counter guys telling people that this is an interference engine. (smash)

Honestly, if you have to ask, you're probably better off having a mechanic do the work. Shouldn't run more than $500 or so.

Really its a non interference head? I did not know that. That makes me feel a whole lot easier about camming out the head. Sweet.

True that! It's a lot of work from what I can tell. I haven't done it myself yet but I know it's a lot of work. 500 is a good price but shoot for 400, with the economy the way it is...well, just try.

Okay non interference it is. Isnt this like the only protege engine/model with non interference?
Its a long shot but it is comparable to the late 80's/ early 90's b2000 non interference engine? My uncle has that kind of truck and it took him a few hours and a few bucks for a new belt to replace it when it snapped.
