Replacing stock Kenwood with another Kenwood; Same connectors?

Hey guys,

My stock Kenwood head unit crapped out. Rather than go through the trouble of the ribbon fix, I'm going to replace it with another, newer-model Kenwood DIN head unit (KDC-MP442U).

Will this be a simple plug & play install? Do the same connectors work for same-brand replacement units? Or will I need to slice/crimp wires to make the new head unit work?

Thanks! (thumb)

When I replaced my head unit, I also used another Kenwood. It was the same connectors, but that was like two years ago. I don't know if they would be different now or not.

yeah I used a KDC-X891 to replace the stock one and the connectors were plug and play. Was definitely worth it to not have to buy a mazda wiring and harness and strip/solder/wrap 20 wires.

I just bought a new kenwood, not the stock model, hasn't arrived yet hope it's plug n play, i assume it is.

Please update us when you recieve it. I've been needing to replace mine with a new one and I don't want to wire anything... I'm lazy.

Oh, sorry I forgot to update. I received my KDC-MP442U head unit and it was a simple plug-and-play installation. Nothing difficult about it.

Although it has slightly fewer sound-adjustment features than the stock head unit, it makes the subwoofer sound better than the stock one did. The USB port in front is awesome, and it lets me plug in a flash drive or my iPod easily. The iPod can be controlled through the head unit without any special cables - you can use your regular iPod USB cable.

The only thing I don't like about it compared to the stock Kenwood is that it doesn't have multiple line display. On the stock Kenwood, I could have the info scroll across the screen on one line, and the time on the second line. Can't do that on this one, as it has one text line only. Other than that, I'm pretty happy. I got it brand new on ebay for $127 with free shipping. (thumb)

All plugs went right in. However the antenna wire had to be taken off the stock one, and connected to the new cd player, then connected to the stockplug. My friend did that part, so I can't really explain it any more. It was easy, just the one part that wasn't plug n play.

So everything plugs up, but there was some modification for that wire, on my kenwood kdcmp142.

Stocker died, bought a dif kenwood and it plugged right in. Then my car got broke into, bought another kenwwod and it was plug and play too. You should be good.
