Replacing cloth interior with leather?

CX-5
Looking to do this as a Christmas gift for my wife. She just got a 2016 CX-5 in March.

What kind of options am I looking at here? Is there anything possible for under a grand? I know they make some covers that are skin tight now a days but I cant think of the name of the brands besides Katzskin

Its strange but Id opt out of leather if I could. I find it very uncomfortable.

I am the same way... Hot in the summer, sticky when it is humid, slippery when it is dry, cold in low temps. But it is easier to wipe clean if you are dirty.

Katzkins are what I have heard people had good luck with and enjoyed using for many years now.

An alternative is leatherseats.com which is another US company. I have only used this company. When I did my first interior in 2010, Katzskin stated it would not honour the materials warranty on a DIY install, while leatherseats.com not only would back their warranty, but had a 1-800 number to call if you were having a problem (and I did, and they helped) and sold a tools/materials package to make the self-install easier. I did a great job and the seats still look good - the car remains in the family.

But the first install was just the seat covers as I was doing a colour match, and the car was an '01 Miata with no sensors or side airbag and only 2 seats. You will be looking at 1400$+ just for the seat surfaces. You could install these yourself, but to do so will require that you disconnect the power supply to ensure you don't deploy airbags by accident. As you are removing the seats, you will need to unplug the seats both front and back (for those reading with a '17 you may have USB ports and seat heaters in the rear). After install, you will likely need to calibrate both the weight sensor on the front passenger and the position censor on the drivers' seat. You will need the procedures for these.

In the event that you are not doing a colour match, then you will have a desire for trim inserts to match the seat colour/material you selected. To do this you will have to pull the interior door panels. When you look behind you will find that the inserts are NOT held in place by removable fasteners, but are plastic protrusions coming from the inserts that pass thru holes in the panels and are then melted over to keep them in place. You will have to carefully melt each of these to remove the insert for recovering and then use plastic material to form new posts on the insert prior to reinstalling it in the panel.

Anyone with smarts, some tools, and no fear can handle this upgrade. This past June my '10 Miata got a non colour match interior upgrade. I got seats, extra leather, and matching vinyl from leatherseats.com. This time I left the work to professionals. Mazda did the panel removal/reinstall and the seat disconnect/reconnect/calibrations. The interiors people did the install of the new covers, matching vinyl on the door panels, leather for the door armrests and the ebrake boot. Everything in Canadian funds was 4100$. And it looks good.

Whether leather is a good choice or not is another matter and you will get opinions on that. My first leather was OEM on my '99 Volvo and I never went back. It can be hot in the summer, and cold in the winter without heaters. It IS usually more comfortable, contributes to a firmer seat, wears like iron and continues to look good (assuming you clean and treat it regularly), and no cloth interior can match it for ease of spills and child vomit cleanup. From the above you should determine whether the upgrade you're contemplating is non-trivial given your own skills and budget. Properly done she should love the result.

You can buy replacement seat covers in leather from Mazda. Online will be cheaper. Perfect fir, color matched.

Try an upholsterer. Being in FL you can probably find someone who does marine upholstery and can easily do auto as well.

I worked for a dealership in 05. We paid 1k or so to have an f150 4 door redone in leather for a customer. It looked and felt oem.
