Replacing CD Player

Hello, I have an 00 Protege ES, and my current Mazda CD Player is malfunctioning, so I'm replacing it w/ a Pioneer DEH1900MP. My Mazda came with a CD Player and a Cassette deck, too - are they a conjoined unit, you will I be able to remove only the CD deck and still be able to keep the cassette deck?

Secondly, what parts will I need? The online store tells me I need a radio harness, a Meta Mazda Harness and a vehicle wiring harness, and an install kit. That all totals to $60. Could the harnesses from the Mazda stereo be used for the Pioneer? If some could help me understand the purposes of these parts, that would be great. Thanks.

You can't keep the tape deck and just replace the cd player. The factory radio works as an integrated system. If you still want the tape deck you should find a replacement stock unit at a junk yard.

If you go to www.crutchfield.com and enter your vehicle type and year, they will help you pick a head unit that will fit your car. They will also give you an instruction manual and all the necessary installation parts free.

You need a specific wiring harness to connect the new HU to the factory wiring. You need the dash kit to fill out the rest of the opening (unless the deck you pick is a double-din style).

you don't NEED the connection kit...just cut/splice/solder...all the wires colors are stickied in the audio section...but that's if you're mechanically/electrically inclined of course. The dash kit is a must tho. I pulled a pocket out of a 99 lx model, iirc, and it looks identical to the msp pocket. The scosche pockets are crap, but they're cheap, readily available, and easy to install. I had to use one in my maxima...but thats the wifes car, so it doesn't bother me, lol.

Are you sure that they work as an integrated system? Because they look like two separate units, and the Radio itself is w/ the CD player, and that's all I would like to replace. How can an aftermarket CD player not work with the OEM cassette player? Maybe if I explain the issue I am having with my CD player, I can save it so it can remain integrated w/ the cassette?

Its not worth explaining. Just go to a junk yard and find another one. There are also online parts stores that could find you one.
