Replacement parts needed for wheel bearing?

I have a buddy mechanic who is going to be fixing my protege5. The front wheel bearing is shot. He says he wants me to get the parts.

Anyway, on a canadian parts site (Im in ontario) I found the wheel bearing. But is there anything else I need for him? Does the bearing need a new circlip or something? Does it need a new sealing part of any sort?

Let me know,
thanks guys. asked only one question before and this forum is already incredibly nice and helpful.

May be easier & worth it to just get the whole hub with bearings already in them. Of course I haven't priced that convenience & there may be, IIRC, some annoying disassembly to make that happen too.

yeah that seems a little to complex for me, besides i dont like messing with my brakes, hubs, or other etc stuff that if done wrong could cause massive problems....wheel falling off lol

i had to replace one of my wheel bearings after some jackass that worked on my car used a torch to get my axle off. it isnt hard if you have a press. or if you have a Hub Tamer, which not very many people have...

how will you know if you have bad bearings?

Generally lots more noise while driving is a good indicator. As they start to go bad, generally from loss of grease, there's going to be metal to metal contact.

Though if you think a bearing may be on the way out, there's a simple test. Jack up that corner of the car, put your hands on the top / bottom of the wheel and push / pull w/ opposite hands. If you feel play (and you'll notice a slight, but distinct 'thunk'), it's on the way out. If there's no play and everything's solid, then you're fine.

When removing the old one, how can you get to the retaining clip (i.e. hub in the way?), or do you just press it out and break the old clip? Is the clip a dealer-only item?

Has anyone removed/replaced a bearing by "carefully" hammering it out and in (I'm thinking out would be easier) with a pipe pressed against the race?

Do you replace the inner seal while doing the bearing?

Hey guys,
I'm new to the forum but this is urgent. I really need to fix my wheel bearings soon. I already found which bearings to buy but I can't find a place where they sell the clips. What is the clip exactly and do you guys have any direct links to a site where I can purchase them?

Thanks!

So I just jacked up both sides of my car, and tested the wheels by placing my hands on the top and bottom and pushing/pulling the wheel. Then I did this with my hands placed left and right on each wheel. My right wheel is solid and gives no play. The left wheel gives not play either, but when my hands are on the left and right side, if I push it hard enough, the wheel BARELY moves.

I Don't think my bearings are bad, but when I drive, I heard a noticeable whirring noise and I know it's coming from the wheels. I hear it when I go drive 20 mph then it goes away and comes back around 40 mph. Anyone have any idea what this is? Maybe I need an alignment?

brakes could be dragging a bit. not necessarily something to worry about. if you tap the brakes (barely) does it go away?

while you're driving, and its making the sound, hit the brakes just hard enough that you feel them come on (don't come to a screaching hault)... see if that makes the sound go away.

I tried it today and it didn't. Perhaps what I'm hearing is the road noise? I wonder if it's normal or not. I'm going to take my car into the shop and see if they can find anything. I just don't want to pay monies haha.

road noise is road noise... metal on metal is something else. ONLY possibility is wind noise off of something... and thats kinda an outside chance.
