you use an oil-filter remover thing (technical term right there). it's like pliers with a circle on the end. you adjust it to the right size (the smallest one for our cars) and turn it in the direction it takes to loosen the filter and tighten the tool's grip. put one back on the same way. ask your dad/friend/autozone/someone who has done it before. it's quite simple.

and then there's those new fram ones where you suposedly can tighten them enough with your hand, but i don't know how much i trust that.
The fram filters do screw on tight enough, but fram filters have become crap in the last few years.

The filter is in a very hard to reach place (actually impossible to reach if you dont jack the car up). i recommend using ramps or jacking one side of the car up high to get under it (be safe!). It's a solid black (factory) filter beneath the headers and behind the tranny, at least on my manual. They put them on VERY tight at the factory, at least mine was.

here's the fram page: the gopher strikes again!!!! happy hunting!

I know this topic has been beaten to a pulp, but I thought this might be useful information to share... I just did my "after-break-in" oil change at 1k miles. I did not do it myself, because to be honest... I crawled under the car and it seemed like more trouble than it was worth. So... I went to PepBoys and bought 4qts of Mobil1 SuperSyn 5w30 (New Car Forumula) and took it to my nearest Mazda dealer for maintenance (at least I get a Mazda OEM oil filter). I spent $40 US in total.

My point is this: There has been some discussion regarding whether or not the oil "needs" to be changed after the supposed "break-in" period. Well... I'm sure part of this has to do with how different people drive their cars... but I stood right next to the mech when he drained the oil from the car and didn't see any metal pieces. So... changing the oil early will, obviously, not hurt the car... but I'm not so sure its really necessary.

The manual says the P5 only holds 3.7 quarts. Isn't it bad to put too much in?

I've always used 4 qts of oil after each change and dipstick reads pefect. we're only talking about 1/3 of a qt here. i doubt it makes any difference.

Well, replying to the actual thread, never take your car to the dealer. If you know an auto shop you trust take it to them, that is if you know a trustworty auto shop. Auto shops rely on their services to survive. If customers are unhappy, one, they will never come back, two, they'll never refer anyone to go to that shop, therefore, they'll be out of business if it continues. A dealer on the other hand hires just about anyone. Think of it this way, would you work harder and more precisely if you worked for yourself, or would you do so for a big company that doesn't really even check to see if you're productive or not. My brother has his own auto shop and relies on his service to stay in business. He works very closely with dealers also, doing smog checks and even some repairs for them. According to him, the mechanics there don't give a rat's a** about your car. They're getting paid no matter how good of a job they do, because it's not their company or business. The big surprise here is that a lot dealers don't even fix the car when you bring it to them. For example, in some cases, the dealers sent it to my brother's shop down the street to fix it for them and then charge the customer more than what my brother would have charged. Detail jobs aren't even performed by most dealers. They send it to the car wash down the street and charge you $100.00 for a $60 job. Trust me on this one, Don't Trust The Dealer. I have a trusted source in the industry. Any questions or concerns, please email me.
