Recommended slotted or drilled rotors?

Wanted to ask some advice, maybe Awaken, TheMAN, DIMA, Robaots could chime in? (uhm)

I modify my ride in stages, or chunks (not in this order) i.e.
1) Rims & Tires and Muffler
2) Lights, car seats
3) Trim, down skirts
4) Horns, Grill, Tint Windows
5) Stereo, Subs, AMPs,

anyhow you get the idea, well this time around with the RIMS
I purchased, I noticed I see the rotors more than I'd like on
the Premacy, so wonder if there is a site that shows the specs
for and sells slotted or drilled rotors for the Mazda 5 / Premacy
and are the rotors the same size on the two vehicles?.

I want to keep the stock calipers, just want to get the
slotted or drilled rotors.

Any suggestions would be great,
Thanks in advance,
Peace!(rei)

well you can always get the rotors for Mazda3 and they will perfectly fit your car.
Drilled or Slotted?

If you going for looks - get drilled
If you drive your car hard and take it to the track once in a while - get slotted or drilled and slotted

I've had drilled rotors on my Mazda6 and have to say that there is really no performance advantage at all, but it does look a lot better.

I also have to say that I really like OEM breaking system on Mazda5 and will not replace rotors or pads with anything other then OEM.

Another solution would be to get your OEM rotors and calipers either painted or powder coated.

I agree that our OEM brakes are pretty awesome. They are the best factory brakes I've ever owned. I would also just paint the calipers, but if you're willing to put up with noisy rotors, get drilled.

the question has been answered
stick to the stock rotors

if you want improved brake performance, upgrade to the 23S (2.3l) Premacy/Axela brakes.... if your car came with 15" rims to begin with, then it'll have the smaller brakes... you can make sure by measuring the rotor size... the upgrade is easy... all you do is get the bigger rotors and caliper brackets... this same upgrade applies to Axela/Mazda3s.... you can find that info on my page

Probably my next mod:

Raybestos disc with Hawk HPS pads !! This is not for look, this is for braking purpose :D

Sounds pretty hardcore. I bought some Centric rotors for my Focus that I haven't put on yet because I was able to sand all of the glaze off of it, but they look very, very nice compared to factory stuff. FYI.

(drive2) Anyone else think this looks like he's launching serious dung into the air? Especially when he wiggles his butt when he launches. It even kinda looks like some kind of space invaders game or something. Needs a linear perspective massage.

So far so good...

Looks = drilled, got it. (first)

I really like OEM breaking system and will not replace rotors or pads with anything other than OEM.

Understand. Noted. :)

Already Done.

I would also just paint the calipers,

Already done. (See pic above) (cabpatch)

if you're willing to put up with noisy rotors, get drilled.

Please expand, explain more, thanks. (boom03)

LOOK = Drill + Slotted PERFORMANCE = Plain disc

Noted. Thanks. (2thumbs)

the question has been answered stick to the stock rotors.

Noted:; however, performance IS NOT the focus here, remember the average speed driven here in Okinawa Japan is. 17.5 MPH ON A GOOD DAY!!
Its ALL FOR THE LOOKS, pretending I go to the track up north (2 1/2 hour drive, *sigh* and cost $50.00 for 3 hours of use on a very very small paved parking lot, NO LIE!)

:'(

if your car came with 15" rims to begin with,

Mine came with 17 wheels and I now run 19

the upgrade is easy...

Could you give some advice on what is needed... JUST to swap out my current rotors with purchased drilled ones? I know it sounds simple, but other than take the calipers off, take rotors off, etc. any special advice?

you can find that info on my page

Link to that page?

Thanks all for your great advice so far however still looking for two things

Anyone got A LINK to a vendor (store) that sells these drilled rotors that fit a M5 and will ship to APO AP box overseas?

And last question Im sure will get some fire responses

Can I drill my OEM rotors myself on a drill bench and a carbide bit(s)?

Peace!(rei)

you already got the bigger brakes... so ignore what I said

if you want to kill yourself with cracked/broken rotors, go ahead and drill them.... don't say we didn't told you so!

anyhow, since you're running such big rims, I say go for the MSA/MS3 brakes... I see them go on yahoo japan once in a while... you just got to watch it like a hawk!

How are they drilled other wise? Cast that way? Lets see some metallurgy know how to back up the claim.

I purchased drilled rotors for my mx-6 GT (turbo) and after a year with a few track days cracks started forming between the holes. I say get slotted.

brembo cast the rotors WITH the holes in it

with only 29 posts, you have much to read about here and on good reputable websites talking about dos/don'ts of cross drilled rotors instead of questioning someone's knowledge

Roger that, no problem, but thanks for the info! :)

Okay, that is what I suspected, because I Googled it and most results came from cracks caused when the rotor was not properly drilled ... bla bal bal... sooo :) thanks for the advice.

I say get slotted.

Thanks for the tip / advice, it'll be considered.

Thanks for the info.

Now...

WHERE DO I BUY SLOTTED OR DRILLED ROTORS FROM THAT WILL SHIP OVER HERE... sorry I'm trying to slip on last order in before the wife explodes in a fit of rage over the spending.. ! LOL! (shocked) :) (glare)

Thanks,
Peace!(rei)

Tirerack.com has Powerslots for $88 up but only the fronts. Some other sites too but it seems like they slap the word "performance" in front of rotor and double the price. Try getting quotes from machine shops for putting the slots in your current rotors.

Yeah this statement definitely doesn't need questioning, all the information is there.

Perhaps they call em "crossDRILLED" because its cool. Here's a bit from Tirerack on their Brembo's:

"Starting with select castings, Brembo Sport drilled brake rotors undergo the race-born practice of cross drilling to provide multiple paths to disperse built-up heat and gasses. The Brembo Sport rotors cross-drilled holes are bi-angle chamfered at the rotors outer surfaces to help reduce the cracking caused by repeated, high stress, high temperature brake applications. Brembo Sport drilled brake rotors are sold in axle pairs."

5550 posts, man, someday I'll be that smart....

Don't assume just because someone has a low number of posts on this website that they have a small knowledge base.

The number of posts has nothing to do with the amount of research someone has done or the experience they have with fwd Mazdas or other cars which may be applicable here.

Look at my post numbers, low, right? Using your logic, you would assume I know little when you know nothing about me. Well, I have been building and racing cars in rally racing (formerly SCCA PRO Rally) and SCCA Road Racing for more than 15 years. For longer than that I have been modifying cars for performance, not looks. My knowledge base includes years of research, modifying cars, track testing, and working with pro car builders. So my knowledge has nothing to do with the number of posts I have, please don't assume someone else's does either.

Not trying to be harsh, but your post came off in a way you may not have meant.

There is one benefit of slotted/cross drilled rotors in daily use: Better performance in rain/flood.
