General Motors plans to import rebadged Opel Astra compacts to replace the Ion at the bottom of Saturn's lineup.
The imports, starting at the end of next year, will sticker at about $16,000 - approximately $3,500 above that of the 2006 Saturn Ion 2 sedan, Ion's base model. Ion production is scheduled to end in December.
GM declined to comment. But sources within GM and its Opel subsidiary confirmed an outline of the plan.
Last year GM sold 100,891 Ions. That car follows the S series, which sold 200,000-plus units from 1993 through 1999, peaking at 286,003 in 1994.
The annual sales target for the Astra model will be considerably lower, ranging from 20,000 to 40,000 units.
Saturn's version of the Astra probably will be assembled in Antwerp, Belgium. The name Astra may be used on the Saturn model.
Importing Astras would fit GM's strategy of repositioning Saturn as a Europeanized brand. At the New York auto show last month, GM Vice Chairman Robert Lutz said nearly all Saturn vehicles will be based on vehicles from Adam Opel AG, GM's German subsidiary.
The current Astra went on sale in Europe in 2004. The European press has praised the car, and it was western Europe's second-best seller last year with 453,000 units, just behind the Volkswagen Golf.
Jim Sanfilippo, executive vice president of the consulting firm AMCI in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., says Saturn should have no trouble selling the car if it is well equipped. "People like to buy cars from Saturn dealers," said Sanfilippo, "and that is still a franchise in General Motors' portfolio that can attract import buyers."
Since 1958, GM occasionally has sold cars from Opel in the United States. In recent years it imported the Cadillac Catera and built the Opel-based Saturn L series in Wilmington, Del. Neither sold well.
GM builds the Ion in Spring Hill, Tenn. It has not disclosed plans for a new vehicle to replace the Ion there.

that looks really nice

any word on the engine options?

so the new GM strategery is Saturn = Opel?

not a bad idea actually, since Opel's got some pretty nice cars from what I can see...

Both engines will be Ecotecs. 2.0T and 2.2L. It would be awesome to get the CDi version.

GM should also bring the OPC and VXR version here too. The Aura is a Opel Vectra.

lol @ GM taking the one brand they had that wasn't just a rebadging and... converting it over to rebadged Opels.

Pontiac = rebadged Chevy
GMC = rebadged Chevy
Saturn = rebadged Opels
Saab = .. rebadged subaru (with new suspension tech)
Suzuki = rebadged Daewoo (verona, forenza, etc)
Chevy = rebadged Daewoo (the Aveo)
Isuzu = rebadged GMC = rebadged Chevy (that Isuzu SUV that is clearly a GMC Envoy which is clearly just a trailblazer).
buick = rebadged chevy (don't know any specifics though)

that's so gross.

At least Ford keeps them to a minimum and tries to differentiate their brands (mazda = fun and young, ford = boring, mercury = woman, lincoln = boring and expensive, ford europe/australia = totally sweet).

nice... now to add the supercharged 2.2 from the SS cobalt ;)

The Cobalt SS Supercharged is a 2.0L. Which is the same as the ION Redline.

All GMs vehicles have corparate cousins that are sold under different brands. All from Daewoo to Holden to Cadilliac. I think there is nothing wrong with it as long as the vehicles are different.

Here's another article:

maybe it's my imagination, but the only difference between the two articles is the extra return line between paragraphs ;)

I dont think they'll kepp the body lines will they? I hope they do, but knowing GM, I doubt it.

Yeah, which is why I think the 6 platform growing a bit to fit the fusion/zephyr/milan is really cool.

My problem is with things like cavalier/sunfire Silverado/Sierra Opel GT / pontiac solstice and crap like that. Plus that new saturn concept SUV that is clearly an Opel concept that was shown at an earlier show, just with a different grille on it.

That being said, the Opel products sure are the nicest "GM" cars I've ever seen... maybe that's just because I'm not used to seeing parts from their parts bin though.

I can see these with Saturn badges on them.

:(:(:( :(

One of my favorite little hatches, why can't GM just give up on Saturn and market Opel in the U.S. and call it an import??

I don't think I could live with myself if I bought a Saturn, even though that is such an awesome looking car.

The Astra OPC has 240hp.

Yep. It's a turbo 2.0L making 240 hp. Does 0-60 in 6.2 seconds and up to 152 mph. In the pics posted above it's the red three-door hatch. Hopefully it shows up exactly the same as a Red Line.

I'd by both a Red Line and five-door "Astra" if Saturn doesn't **** it up and dumb them down. I absolutley love the three-door.
