Rear Wiper Motor

I drive a 2002 p5. Throughout the winter I was having a horrible time getting my rear wiper to work. I would have to turn it on and manually go turn it for a few mins before it would do anything by itself. Recentlly though, the thing completely died on me and I need a replacement.

Does anyone know an aftermarket one I can get instead of the factory one? Mazda is charging me a ton of money for it and I can't seem to find any info on what else may work. Any thoughts?

Thanx.

There's about a 99.99% chance that it's made by somebody other than Mazda and that the same motor is used in many other cars, many of them not from Mazda. So, since it isn't working anyway, take it out of the car and inspect it carefully for markings. If you're lucky it will have enough info on it so that you can find the manufacturer, and work from there.

I just saved a couple of hundred dollars by replacing a small electrical motor on our home furnace using the same method. (What you think Carrier makes electric motors?).

pretty sure one of the local hawaii guys has an extra wiper motor. He removed it a while ago. I'll let him know you are looking.

My wiper motor is shot as well. Is there a How To on changing it?

Look in the How-To section...there is a thread about how to convert over to the Mazda6 Wiper on the p5. It looks easy and is a great upgrade!

Here's yer link: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123643192&highlight=rear+wiper

This is a great mod (I have done it) but wont help him in this case as he is looking to replace the motor. This kit only replaces the arm and blade. Do contact Jason at http://www.onlinemazdaparts.com as he gives discounts. Plus anything over $100 is free shipping.

**edit**Just looked it up for ya.

Description Year MSRP Price Core Price Your Price

wiper motor - Hatchback - Hatchback 02-03 $164.41 $0.00 $131.53
Windshield - Wiper and washer components - wiper motor

This is the sort of situation where a "bad motor" could be anything from a dirty electrical contact, to the connector on the shaft having come loose, to, well, a bad motor. You must disassemble and look or you'll never be able to distinguish the easy/cheap fixes (clean the connectors, tighten a set screw) from the expensive (replace the whole motor). Also, if the motor really is "bad" you might want to disassemble the motor itself. I've seen quite a few "bad" electrical motors (admittedly, most often in vacuum cleaners and computers) which where jammed up inside with filth - after a good cleaning they worked again. Sometimes a few drops of oil on the bearings was all that was needed.

Or to put it in the short form - if the bearings aren't ruined or out of lubricant, and the coils are neither shorted nor open, and the capacitor, if one is present, is good, then an electrical motor should "just work".

Alright, well I took my motor/assembly apart. The problem is that my wiper seized up and my motor actually works. This caused a plastic gear in assembly to wear down so that the worm gear on the motor turns properly but it cannot engage the plastic gear that drives the wiper gear (which is steel).

Any thoughts on where I could get a replacement gear? $130 for one plastic gear seems excessive.

Cheers.

Is there a set screw or something like that holding the broken plastic gear in place, or is it riveted in there? If there is a way to replace that gear then pull it out and look for identifying marks - Mazda doesn't make little plastic gears either. If there aren't any marks then measure it well and google for "plastic gears", whereupon you will find that there are very, very many available for a lot less than $130.

If that gearbox cannot be repaired a visit to the junk yard may be in order.
