Rear pass-side brake light does not work

I replaced the bulb to no avail. Only the rear passenger's side won't work. I back-up light works on both sides though. Just bought the car two days ago, and I don't know much about the electronics or wiring. What could be wrong?

What kind of car do you have?
you might want to check fuses, and the original bulb,.... is it bad?

original bulb was not bad. 2004 Mazda 3 hatchback, 106,000 miles

I don't see it making sense that there are separate fuses for the right and left side, unless there are?

For that matter, I do not have an owner's manual. What fuse would it be?
