Rear License Plate Attachment Question

2009 CX-9
I have a new to me 2009 CX-9 that I purchased in California. The California plates had dealer frames that seemed to do a good job of keeping the license plate from making direct contact with the paint on the tailgate. In Massachusetts the license plate frames are illegal because they block the "Massachusetts" and "Spirit of America" from being seen.

I don't know if it is okay to have the plate directly touching the metal on the tailgate or if there should be some space between the plate and the paint. How is your rear license plate attached?

Thanks in advance for your help with this question!

You could put some dynamat on the other side of the plate or some other similar adhesive material.

It would give the plate a stand off diatance..

Stick on rubber bumpers from Lowes work great here. Clean the back of plate in the contact area with alcohal then stick on. A small dab of teflon or silicone on the pads avoid contact friction and rubbing wear on the gate.

Thanks! I'll give that a shot.

The rubber bumpers worked like a charm! Now there is enough separation between the paint on the body and the license plate to allow for road grime and salt to wash away. No rattle either!
