Rear brake pads, wtf?

So today I bought some caliper paint for my mz3, everything seemed to go fine getting it jacked and the calipers off, but as soon as I saw the pads, I had to stop to think.. "who was the monkey who installed this s***!?"

So the inner pad was not held in place by any clips or anything and just fell out as soon as the caliper was unbolted. This was what it looked like:

I cannot imagine this is normal, especially with how uneven the wear was on the outside pad as well.

Either way, I do believe it was what was giving me the squeaks under most braking conditions. I was also seeing an insane amount of dusting too. I wash my car every other week or so and my rear rims are always caked in dust.

Has anybody else seen this before? Any tips for when I go to install new pads tomorrow?

thanks for the protip hahaha.
And I did. It's hard to see, but that pad is also sloped left to right as well haha. I showed it to the guys at my local O'Reilly's and they were dumbfounded.
Tomorrow I'll finish painting the fronts and then I will get some pics of my ride up finally.

Make sure you put the spring clips in that keep the pads off the rotors and you'll be fine. What you see is the normal wear when you're not using the clips to keep the pads off the rotor.

Also, when I take my calipers off the pads spring out of the calipers because of the clips. Nothing really holds them in.
