re: that "rusty" engine sound, under load, low RPM's

(shrug)

i read about this noise years ago and forget what is was. i don't believe it was bad becasue I did not worry about it after reading about it.

when cruising in low RPM's, and when the engine is under load (like going uphill), you get that "rusty" sound from the engine. i am sure most of you know what i mean.

i can remember it happening in my saab 900 with many miles and many other 4-cyl engines.

can someone please remind me what this sound is.

Thanks.

"rusty" is a sound?

haha

but on a serious note that sounds an aweful lot like pinging... get higher octane gas (or from a better gas station) or friggen downshift so the engine doesn't lug down.

i use mobile or shell gas. i know i could downshift, but you get these sounds at 1800-2500 before it goes away.....sometimes there is no need for a downshift. i have noticed a nice gain from my cluth, flywheel, and header installs over the past couple of weeks.

thanks for the replies. i guess that is what i could have read a while ago.

VTCS..its when you first start your car and drive around when its cold..its for cold start emissions..makes a clanging and rusty sound until the car has warmed up.

....does it when engine is fully warmed. filled her w/89 yesterday and have noticed nothing today....just have that whistle when RPM's are between 5250-6500 under WOT. sounds like it is coming from the passenger side of the engine?
