Hey folks, does anybody have experience painting their cars with spraypaint? I remember a write-up in Sport Compact Car where they painted a WRX flat black with krylon or rustoleum, and it looked ******* awesome. I just wanted to see if anyone here had done it.

for flat black, why not just Plasti-dip? dont like it, peel it off :)
otherwise, spray paint will never hold up with daily driving, every little pebble and road debris will chip the rattle can paint.

There is a wealth of info here-

Also, if you're thinking about flat black, definitely go with plasti-dip. It gives a great flat finish, its cheap, and if you decide you don't like it it peals off without damaging the paint under it. It also holds up great. I have some experience with the stuff because I had to do a cheap and dirty paint job on my Audi after my brother-in-law backed into me.

Hey what about CLEAR plasti-dip just to the face of the car? Then just peel off all the bugs and rock dings at the end of the summer?

I don't know that the clear plasti-dip could be laid nicely enough to act as a clear ,summer long protectant. You can't buff, sand, or polish it so the finish is just whatever you get from the spray gun or rattle can. That being said it would still look WAY better than the blue painters tape people use for autocross and track days. I hate showing up and seeing cars covered in that stuff. I think it really cheapens the sport for people who don't know why its there and are just checking things out.

I've actually painted a few cars with spray paint, just take the time to do it right and it comes out awesome. My lasted about a year on my p5 but i only took 4 hours to sand down the car and paint and i didn't clear coat it. You couldn't tell i even spray painted it though. I've got pictures i can post them if you want to check it out, plus i think i've got some pictures of some other cars we also spray painted.

Why do you want to do this, is your factory paint ruined to the point where you would actually consider using rattle cans?

i wanted the flat look and that was months after. plus it was 50 dollars vs 500 for a macco one. my original one was flaking and the clear coat was fading and a lot of parts were replaced so it was 5 colors or one. i dont know his reason though

I'm merely considering it at the moment. My clear coat is going/gone in many places, I like the flat black look, and I'm not interested in shelling out the cash for a professional paint job.

I buy paint from sherwinn Williams automotive paint supply. They can put the paint in spray cans if you like. It cost arround $80 for 6 12oz aerosal cans. Get it colored matched to your paint code. Prep the vehicle properly, lay down a good primer and several layers of color with even coats and time to dry between... Clearcoat, wetsand, buff, polish, wax. Just wait at least a week before you wash/wax the car. That's just a quick guide, I assume no liability for botched paintjobs... Lol...

that miata was painted nice but not perfect. seems he has some "orange peel" texture he needs to address. but for the most part perfect. here is a dude on the accord forums that has rolled 2 of his cars perfectly.

It's graffiti paint and it went on pretty heavy. Only time will tell with chipping, but I have done some highway driving and not had any issues yet.
