Random multiple cylinder misfire???

um wow? so the 17.99 ones are a-ok, decent quality? I will buy them today if they are. I'm at nearly 75k miles so it'll probably be time to replace them soon anyway, but my idle is low and a bit rough after my crazy misfiring incident a few weeks back.
thats what i am running. have been since feb-march or so.

Oh and yesterday it was raining pretty heavily all day so my car got pwned by it's massively open hood yet again and I was doin a little misfiring for the first half mile or so of driving. No CEL this time, though the code is still stored from last time I'm sure. Is autozone one of the places that'll pull the code for free? I wanna write them down just in case something weird is stored in there.
yes Autozone will pull the code.

I know mine isn't the coil packs because I swapped mine and the code still comes up as cyl 1

i would try shifting the injectors over to see if the code follows that injector. if it does, thats your problem.

yeah that was the next step. Weird thing is when it is running bad and I reset the computer it gets better. I'm completely lost on that one. Someone said something about a safe mode, could that be messing up if it's trying to fix a temporary problem that isn't happening at the time?

afaik, the only way to alter the fuel mixture is with engine management of some source (i could be wrong on this)

does it idle harsh or anything?

Jon thanks for all the info. On rockauto they are $12.41 a piece, but I'm guessing Autozone can get them for me much faster. I'm going to call the Autozone downtown when I get out of work to see if it's just like at their regional warehouse or something. I've had orders with them take under an hour before (regional warehouse is in Buffalo, NY IIRC). If they can't get them to me before Sunday, I'll just order from Rockauto. I don't need any coil pack gaskets or anything right? I was guessing that the part includes the entire piece that I pull off the car every time I change my spark plugs, is that right?

yup. just remove the 2 bolts on each, pop the wires off, plug the new one in, and bolt it back down. pretty easy. even if you have no clue what an engine is, it wouldnt take more than 10 minutes.

and no prob on the info :)

good stuff. Just wanted to confirm since I know I can order the coil boots from Mazda separate from the coil packs.

.. weee *goes on very small spending spree for my car*

It idles a little rough most of the time but when the light comes on the RPMs start to bounce. Then if I reset the computer it goes back to the little rough idle. I not that concerned about the rough idle because it just barely noticeable but everything else makes me worry a lot

here goes:

Misfiring in the same cylinder after switching them: check the sparkplug gap, make sure it is snugged down, make sure the plug wire is tight, make sure the coil is pushed all the way in and the bolts snugged down. 10mm fyi

Misfiring after switching them etc: Get a new ignition coil at rockauto. 5% discount code to follow. Losing acceleration without stalling, rough idle, and blinking to fully on CEL. I foget the code but it can say misfire or multiple misfire, which is the ignition coil

Plug wires:
MagStar 8.5mm double silicone MAGTAR Wires (red, yellow, blue), where to buy? Advance Auto Parts
MAGNECOR 8.5mm Ignition Wires
Nology Hotwires (lots of colors to choose from), where to buy? protegegarage.com

Ignition Coils:
LOL Check out the price difference. Yes it is the same part. Dang manufacturer trying to pwn somebody.

EGR issues after cleaning:
Make sure the gasket is on, the tubes are plugged in correctly and all of the way, and the bolts are snug. Also be sure to oil the spring and rod that goes down the center of the spring. If not than it will stick and replicate the problems that a dirty egr has.

If you do go to rockauto and order your plugs or coil use this code for an extra 5% off. Enter 92991CBAA25A in the "How did you hear about us" portion and receive 5% off of your order. Expires 01/15/2007 I have a special code that has a longer expiration date. Once you make a purchase they will issue you a code but it is only good for 6 weeks.

I think that covers it. Anything I missed let me know.

But what if you switch them and the misfire doesn't move? My plugs were gapped and the wires are on snug.

And you are positive that they are the right plugs? If they are too short or too long in the thread or neck you will still get a misfire. I would swap out some new ones and if that fixes it then you are good. If not at least you have extra for a future change.

I just changed them with the correct plugs. And the light continues to come on. It usually happens I drive it hard, but it starting to happen a little more often and I don't know if it a coincidence but it seems to happen under a half tank of fuel.

I edit my last post with a little more detail ^^^

But when I take it to auto zone it comes up 'Cylinder 1 misfire' not sure of the of the number of the code.

If you think that it may be fuel related put a can of seahfoam in your gas tank that will clean the injectors and get rid of the contaminants like water or sludge. Otherwise go have it scanned again as the code number is very important. Then you can look it up by the code rather than the description. Some codes have more than one description.

I think the code was P0301, which could be wires and/or coil packs, but it could also be fuel related. Such as a bad injector, or it could be too much /too little fuel pressure. So I'll change out the injector with a spare I got from Ken at Protegegarage.com, and Ill also see what I can do about changing the fuel filter.

Thanks for your help

Great... I've just read about 5 threads just like this. My CEL came on . P030 and P0401. Random multiple cylinder misfire and EGR flow insufficient, respectively. I hope to god that I don't have to go through what some of the guys here have gone through.

Clean your EGR, there is a how to on here and is pretty straight forward and simple to do.

Switch your ignition coils, check your plugs, and reset your ecu. How many miles on your car? I had the multiple misfire and both ignition coils were bad. I bought new ones for 14.00 each at rockauto.
