Radio conked out. Help!

My radio/stereo has conked out. My mechanic says all the power to the unit is fine, but doesn't fix stereo issues. I'm fine removing the stereo, but don't know if I need to replace it with something specific. Brand, size, etc.

2003 Mazda Protege ES 2.0

I found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfXuhtKUUbk

and this: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?113853-Removing-stock-radio-from-2003-Protege

I've also been looking at this thread: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?8940-Speaker-Sizes-Harnesses-and-Kits-of-all-Mazdas!

So is it possible to just get an off the shelf kit that will work for a replacement stereo?

Any thoughts anyone?

Thanks :)

that is the correct way to remove the head unit. then just go to any audio store and you can pick up an aftermarket head unit for pretty cheap, and then get a pocket for underneath it. you can probably get it done for a little more than 100 dollars

THanks for the reply. I was able to wrench the old unit out of there, and have now put in the new one.. A little more than $125 though, since I wanted a unit that would talk to my iPod.

i got my sony head unit as a gift, but it was about 70 and i installed it all on my own.
