2017~2024 Radar Detector recommendations

The Waze app. It has saved me many times.
This right here. It has saved my ass a LOT.

The problem with radar detectors is, even if it can detect laser, which almost all of them can, by the time you are able to react, it is too late.

If it's legal in your state, a laser jammer, a *real* one which is a couple grand, is absolutely a requirement if you want protection from getting a ticket.

If you get "shot" with laser, no detector will save you.
That is, what happened to me a few years ago, with my Escort Redline.
I have disabled K band, using only KA and it's been fine, no false alarms.
Why it does not work with your car?

Au contraire, mon ami! I have had my Gen2 Valentine1 laser alert go off, slam on the brakes and lock eyes with an angry LEO in Nashville. The signal passed through the glass of another car. Mostly luck, but Valentines work. The Gen2 is much quieter. It ignores many road sign speed readers and lots of car motion detectors, like Honda and Cadillac. It still doesn't ignore you're own SCBS, though it usually ignores other Mazdas. Ka band detection is roughly 2x as far as the Gen1 V1.

It is head and shoulders better than any other detector. The direction arrows alone make it more usable than the rest.

The sensitive rear horn of the R7 enables it to pick up more BSM specially falsing more when on board a Mazda. You have to tweak/nuter that rear horn a bit to be able to achieve the quiteness of the R4.

Tried a radenso XP, no go in the cx5, constant k band hits. It’s a great radar detector, very well built, super long range and excellent customer service, just not for the cx5. Really wish it would have worked.

Watched the vortex video showing minimal falses with a cx5 and the R7 so decided to buy one And give it a shot. Huge improvement, very few false hits to k band that I can tell, couple of false x band hits, guessing from garage door openers, but it’s really quiet overall. Used the vortex recommended settings, which includes mrcd on. A lot more than I really want to spend on a radar detector, but having driven with them for 35 years, not having one just wasn’t an option. have to say, for $500, the materials don’t feel particularly solid, the cord is cheap compared to the radenso and the speaker is kind of lame, but it does what it’s supposed to do. love the ability to customize just about everything.
firmware is the latest, 1.41 I think it said from October.

I was driving behind a Macan this morning. I could see the guy had a radar detector in the windshield. my cx5 must have been giving his radar false hits because he was driving dead on the speed limit.

I’m am running a Valentine that I purchased from a friend who owned a fairly new Corvette. It has performed magnificently for me. But then again, if you get the gun pointed at you and the officer pulls the trigger? Get out your wallet. Unless you’re a smooth operator.

There is a software upgrade available and I need to send it in to Valentine for the latest “whatever” that they do inside the box. But for dependability? It has always answered the call. But, anytime I’m approaching a metro area with stores having sensors on their doors that automatically open as you approach? It’s a form of radar and the Valentine will scream like a banshee. But for open road “recklessness” (that’s what your citation will read 😯)? It’s awesome.

The rabbit is key! Saved me a few times. Even better if you’re in the middle of a convoy.

I used a rabbit on a road trip a few years ago going through Georgia on I-20. There was a guy in a black BMW doing about 95 that passed me, and I was like, hell yeah! I sped up and stayed about 1/4-1/2 mile back, still within eyesight though.

I made DAMNED good time!
