Escort 8500 and the 8500 x50 are awesome but have a tendency to randomly sense laser for no reason (hard accel etc.) The laser sensor gets out of calibration or something like that. It has saved me from many many tickets.

i was doing some research on this on google "best radar detector" etc and i found that bel rx65 pro was one of the best rated? but thats not a choice here... i just got it from ebay today, haven't got a chance to try it out yet..

From what I've read, the STi is the best radar detector for beating radar detector detectors... for the those states in the US that have laws against using a radar detector (can't remember which states)

don't know much about the valentine

i live in NC where it's legal but the Passport is detected by the Spectre where as the STi is not, for now. But i'm not THAT worried about it as of now

valentine one. im on my 3rd one..upgrade every 2 years or so. arrows come in handy.

refuse to drive without it

Valentine one has paid for itself 10 times over for me. Knowing the direction of the radar defeats any of its shortfalls IMO and there arent many!

I just spent a week on a road trip through California and Arizona with my new 9500i. Compared to my Valentine V1, it seems less sensitive, at least to falses. On real hits the sensitivity seems about the same. Maybe Escort has better false rejection, or maybe it really is less sensitive than the V1. In my opinion, false alarms are a big problem because I then tend to automatically mute every beep and potentially miss the real ones. the 9500i false rejection and ability to mark known falses makes it the winner in my book, even if slightly less sensitive, because alarms are rare and you really pay attention when one happens.

None. I have tried a few over the years (but not for about 5 now), and I find that all of the "false" alarms put me into a constant paranoid mode. Furthermore, I have got more than 75% of all my tickets while using one. Why? Well, the cops aren't stupid, they just pulse their radar / laser on at the last second...by the time your detector goes off, it is too late.

I have found the best method -- for me -- is to keep a constant eye out on the sides of the road, my rear view mirror, and little off-roads / entrances where they can hide. I treat them all as potential cop spots, and it has been very successful for me. I still drive "spirited" when I can, but frankly, I have just never encountered a rador detector I can trust better than myself. (Especially with the way the cops pulse them around here...)

That's exactly what I do...it's weird, I find my entire focus while driving now is finding the cop...like where's Waldo. I even do it when I am a passenger and my friends are amazed how quick I pick them up. Now ANYTHING out of the ordinary I spot because there is a good chance it is a cop.

I couldn't agree with you more. I watch folks get busted all the time because they weren't looking for them, or they had radar detectors that didn't save them in time.

But hey, I'm not busting on RDs --- whatever works for you...use it!

escort and beltronics are sister companies...

I did a brief overview of specs and they look nearly identical AND they are the same price (omg)

I will almost bet that they are identical units with the exception of packaging.

with that said, I loved my escort 8500 when I had it (stolen). However, common sense comes into play when dealing with a radar detector. Its not a license to speed, its just to help you see what your eyes cannot. And even in those POP radar situations, you use common sense and generally get away without a ticket. If they are using pop, your radar will usually pick it up beforehand due to other drivers but you have to realize that and not think its a false reading.

(and when cops hit you with POP radars, its readings dont hold up in court unless hes hit you again with full on for more than 2 seconds. Its about knowing the law :p)
