Quieter than stock exhaust??

I have the "loud one" btw but I like to hear the exhaust

I actually used to have the 03.5 oval tipped one but it was way too quiet for me, even with the header ;)

As said by the other members the Mazdaspeed muffler is an option by mazda made by mazda as a performance muffler for the Protege5 and Protege sedan it was never meant for the MSP because it already had a performance muffler. The oval ti[ muffler was made by Racing Beat for the 2003.5 MSP they also made a circle tip one for the 2003 MSP which also said Racing Beat on it.

I don't know why they replaced the Racing Beat one with a Mazdaspeed one. But most probably the sound you are not liking is due to the Mazdaspeed axle back which you should replace back with the original Racing Beat one.

mazda didn't make that bad droning one.... they contracted bosal to make it
I think they didn't replace the racing beat made ones with the same kind because they were made in a limited run and didn't have any more of them

the only other quiet solution is to get the JDM mazdaspeed one, which is made by yumex

there's nothing bad about the "droning" one, it's actually a very nicely built piece

maybe you aren't into straight-through designs, though

dude, for the $100 I paid it's hard to beat

all stainless bolt-on axleback (didn't want another welded-on job that would fall apart in 12 months)

and, it has a much richer sound than canister types

dude, there's way better "straight through" glass pack mufflers out there

Is the Mazdaspeed Axleback (bosal one) a glasspack? I didn't know that. It's not bad but like.. meh. Fitment and quality wise it's on par with my Racing Beat catback definitely, but with a header the sound on the highway was too much for me.

Thanks I think I will post for a 03 MSP swap and see if someone would want this louder muffler.

Is it literally a bolt on switch?

I'm a mid 30 year old, clinging to my youth with this great 2003.5 MSP - just purchased used with only 35000 miles. I love the car as handling is pretty much my top priority in cars.

I want to quiet the stock exhaust on the MSP. I put the stock airbox back in (prev owner had injen) and dropped a k&n filter in. That helped a little but the resonant sound when you are maintaining a speed is too much for this 'old' guy. I'd rather hear the stereo if I'm not accelerating hard.

Looking for suggestions with cost in mind. To me trying a muffler like HKS sounds like a good first try from reading some other exhaust threads. Trying to keep modification to a minimum also.

Thanks in advance for the help.

try putting on a performace cat and a dynomax turbo muffler.
performance and tolerable.

im not sure if he'll trade but i know citizenpro down here in houston was wanting to sell his stock 03.5 msp exhaust (the oval one) for about $100. Im goin to the ballgame with him tomorrow and see if he would be willing to trade (he probably might)

isn't the greddy sp2 pretty quiet?
i have the SP2 and like previously said it's quite like stock exhausts at idle and low rpms and then when you rev it high it can sound pretty mean and loud.

Cool thanks for asking. I just posted a WTT today but if I have no luck - I might be up for buying one.

I'll have the oval one but it has a crack on it. It honestly does not bother me enough to get it fixed with the louder one. Besides most of the time the black sud from the engine cover its up pretty well. And my MSP is very quite, well for a mazdaspeed at least.

BTW u might want to post in if you are in Nova
