Quick Question About What Happened During the F1

It was against the rules. They can bring 2 but they can't change the tires since they already did practice runs. They have to use the SAME set of tires the entire weekend.

Well yeah they should of had them with them (hand) But since they weren't BROUGHT to the venue originally they couldn't use them. Also 2 different sets usually means Dry weather and Rain tires. So i bet they had rain tires as back ups.

But they (as a tire company) have been on this track before ... why did they not supply proper tires.

I'd wager that Michelin has separate teams of engineers working on their tires for each series. They could have made a tire for Indy that worked in F1, but it sounds like they failed to adequately test under F1 conditions + banking. It took alot of balls from Michelin to come out and say the teams should not race due to safety concerns.

The resulting mess between the teams and the FIA just goes to show how bad things are getting. GPWC anyone?

the race at indy is the only one of the F1 gp's with a banked corner. the tires had a weak spot along the edge before the tread began and the stress of the banked corner was causing them to split. the teams were told that it was unsafe to race at full speed around the corner and that the only way safety could be guaranteed was for them to not take the corner at full speed. the teams didn't want to do that, obviously...so they suggested adding the chicane. i personally don't think that the course should be changed because a tire manufacturer failed. i mean, if it had been the bridgestones that were having the problem and the 6 cars that raced had dropped out, no one would really care. there's no way they would change up the course for 3 teams... also, michelin had another set of tires, but the other set had the same structural problem, so just changing tires wasn't really an option.

funny thing, if they had added the chicane they were going to allow 3 practice laps for the drivers to get acquainted with the change. trulli, the pole sitter, didn't have enough gas to make it around 3 laps...

Keep in mind the track was resurfaced for the first time in 10 years this past winter. It was so coarse that they have to use a diamond cutter to shave the track twice since then. Both nascar and indy have both cancelled their tests and postponed them because this reason. With the new track conditions michelin did not know the tires would react the way they did.

michelin can't use that as an excuse....how did bridgestone know how the track was gonna handle?

FYI: you didn't see the INDY 500 go down with severe tire issues right? so i don't think they can use the resurface excuse.

it wasn't the resurfacing... it was the banking!!! the michelins had a weak spot and it couldn't deal with the banking of turn 13...

a chicane is a series of turns, going one direction and then back the other.

right but a temporary one is usually made up of a stack of tires, etc.

also another reason why Michelin (nor the teams) knew about the tires until race weekend is because they couldn't rely on any other type of racing to try and factor how the tires would react. most other types of racing allow tire changes through the race (F1's bulls*** attempt to level the field against Ferrari) and no other racing comes close to F1. Nascar can rely on the trucks, CART can rely a bit more on the IRL (though even that's a stretch), etc.
Formula 1 is so far beyond other pavement racing that they are unto themselves and closest to pushing the envelope beyond.
sad day for America's racing fans that appreciate the fine art of the right hand turn...

so true... :(

wait.....drivers make right-hand turns?! that's impossible!

j/k.....i personally don't even watch races that only make left-hand turns....booorrrriing!

EDIT: i take that back...i watch the daytona 500 and the indy 500

There are serious differences between the 2 cars, not to mention they use a completely different tire, notably indy allows slicks where F1 doesnt. Also bridgestone got a lot of their tire information from sister company firestone, which frequently races on the track.

But you are right, its really michelins fault, they did not provide an adequate tire.
