quick question about installing my J-pipe

Just have a quick question, I searched but couldn't find anything about exhaust gaskets.

I bought I SLS Performance J/mid pipe, will I need to have new exhaust gaskets ready to do the install or will the old ones work okay?

I'm sure they will be special order from the parts stores.

Thanks for any help!

Use your judgement when you take off the oem pipe. I was able to reuse my gaskets as they were still intact. Had 23K on them at the time of the pipe change.

Evansville? Whoo hoo!! I was feeling lonely.

I typically reuse my gaskets.

New gaskets are available from Napa Auto Parts. You should be able to reuse the donut gasket, but I'd recommend replace the gasket between the s & j pipes. You will need to order for an 03 Protege 5 though. The part # is 16889. The materiel is slightly different. It's softer so it seals up a little better than reusing the oem sheet metal type gasket.

i have a small leak where my SLS mid-pipe meets with my catback pipe. i reused the donut gasket too and tightened the heck out of it. i may just go get one of those regular exhaust gaskets. i like those better anyways.

Hmmmm.
I have 73K on mine. Maybe new gaskets are in order regardless.

Okay,

stupid question: Difference between said "donut" gasket and "regular" gasket???

And for the S pipe to mid pipe I should get the P5 NA gasket instead of the speed version which is metal right?

Pic 1 - Napa s-j pipe replacement gasket I talked about a few posts ago. They are thicker & softer than the OEM-Type and should be reuseable several times.

Pic 2 - Donut type gasket, I don't think you'll need this type with the after market j-pipe, but I'm not sure... You may need the type of gasket from Chpstickhero's post.

Pic 3 - OEM type s-j gasket. Also available from Napa, but will probably be special order. These are designed to be one-time use. The first time you tighten them down it crushes that raised ring and creates the seal.

Nope, I really don't make it down that side of Green very often unless I'm going to Sears. Either way, my car isn't finished yet and is sitting in the garage. What does your MSP look like? I have only seen a few around.

I might have to check into the NAPA gaskets when my car is done. Thanks for the pics and info.

My MSP is stock appearing, in the titanium gray metallic. I like the way the cars look stock - won't be changing anything. don't think I'll even lower it. it already rides rough enough for me.

what are you "finishing" on your car? turbo system?

so where/how do I get a gasket like this to replace the donut if need be?

is it a universal type item or what?

Yeah, just a stardard 2 bolt flange gasket. You can get them in various diameters.

Yup, Hiboost. Still waiting on some parts from Juan (Hiboost) that weren't in the box. There is one Titanium Gray where I live (Sugar Mill) and I have seen a Sand Mica (I think that is the color) running around with decals on the doors.

well, it is pretty much done. just waiting on the last of the parts. when they come in, i should have it done within a day or two.

now i know that there is another mazda enthusiast in town who actually knows what a great car he has. there used to be a guy who lived down the street from me with an MP3. unfortunately, it was pretty banged up and looked like it was not taken care of at all..

i bet your car will sound a little meaner now with the midpipe on

I went under my car to fix the leak last night. the stock donut should work, i measured it up against my SLS midpipe and it fits fine. you can try using the bronze gasket sealer if you want. but to be safe, i went ahead and got a universal 2.5" exhaust gasket.

I went to the parts counter at pepboys and they pulled a few boxes of flanges/gaskets from their shelf. ask for a measuring tape. you'll need a 2.5" inner diameter (measure the hole) two bolt flange.

When I installed it, i actually left the stock donut gasket in there as well. I did have a little trouble aligning it all up. i'm guessing there were some tolerance difference between the SLS midpipe, the gasket and the flange on the MSP catback. so i had to just widen the hole on the gasket with my dremel. not a big deal. at least there are no more leaks. yay.

hehe. Hope so. . . .

Been thinking about a magnaflow muffler a little. Heard a few here and there and they seem to have a nice tone, without having the huge by huge exhaust tip that I don't care for.

the stock muffler doesn't sound bad (although it supposedly has had a RX-8 muffler put on there by the dealer when the stocker went bad) but I wouldn't mind a little more sound.

i'd like to take a look at your project when you get er goin. we'll have to meet up sometime.
