Questions About Coolant

well ****, at this rate, have it done professionally, all this wasted time arguing....

personally, I'd opt for the cold flush, it is safer and a little tap water isn't going to rust the **** out of your coolant system...

then again, I have no plans to flush my coolant, I don't even see a need for it!

When I drained it hot, at least twice as much came out as when it was cold.
Sure, there might be a tiny dribble, but I don't want to wait 2 days for it to drain, thankyou.

The whole idea of the thermostat is to block water flow until the engine is hot.
I'll bet you $1000 there is a weep hole in every thermostat made

So you used to be a service manager, eh? No wonder people are weary of letting other people fiddle with their cars...I

Yeh, a newb that thinks he knows something! (yupnope) We need more of those.

You have no idea who you are talking to or what they know. What have you ever done to cars? Cheap ass APC wings and stickers dont count. I've done more things with engines and stereos and other car related stuff than you will ever do in a lifetime. I have a complete turbo kit, intercooled, greddy emanage, full 3" exhaust all hand made by me. Not a thing was bought other than the intercooler core and the turbo. I cnc'd the flanges fabbed all the piping brackets mounts etc. I have 12 speakers and 3 amps all sunk and hidden to where you cannot even see them. I have custom made suspension tie bars and linkages, made by me. I've made and sold over 40 of the hood prop kits. I've helped about 10 people put together their own turbo kits.

And to top it off my car was totaled when i bought it, and i rebuilt it.

Now onto my cars in the past, an Audi s4, a 300c, a 325is, a 4runner, 2 beetles, a Saab 9000, not a one of them was left even remotely stock.

And I'm currently working on a turbo kit for my ZX6-R, and rebuilding a SHO motor to put in my '06 Freestyle.

O'ya, my cars have never and will never be to ANY service center.

Now try to tell me that you know more than me and that draining antifreeze hot is a GOOD idea.

sorry, I'm done argueing. I've never seen one on the side of the rad, you'll just have to look and see on yours. Mine is an auto so i cant look and tell you for sure.

hmmm all the help so far has been good. I also want to know, I i drive home tomorrow morning. How long should my car sit out before I start doing this, so that my coolant isn't extremley hot

It depends on how hot it gets and how it its outside. Just give like an hour or so (I'm guessing here) just turn the key on and check the temp gauge, wait till its under about 90 or so, then no chance of getting burnt.

Holy s***.. after reading the first post that's what I suggested. I mean, if you were thinking about trying brain surgery for the first time but couldn't figure out where the brain was located, for God's sake, just forget it and go to a professional

well you see I have a little problem... I look at the front of the rad and see no plug, and underneath it, its a bit hard to see. The problem is I have a manual transaxle. this means the plug should be in front of the rad, and i dont see it. Whats the point of giving up too. That way I will never learn. DOing little at a time will get me to do better things later.

If you believe that, then why say this?

I've done more things with engines and stereos and other car related stuff than you will ever do in a lifetime

I'm sorry you feel the need to justify yourself by reeling off pet projects and incorrectly prejudging my level of automotive knowledge simply because I'm new to the forum...

lol, you guys are ridiculous. Stop the bickering... I'll deliver my car to you guys and you can both fix everything on it and see who does a better job.

Forget that. We wanna see a good ol' fashioned fist fight (fight)

hmmm all this info is processing. I called an autoshop today and they say that they drain my coolant with a machine because the car must be hot in order to get all the coolant flushed. Actually two different places told me the same thing

Yes, that is how you do it if you have the "machine". Its not actually a machine, but basically in a nut shell its a 30 gal drum under a "cabinet" with a bucket on top. You disconnect your upper hose and connect the hose to the lower drum and the rad to the upper "bucket" and then you start your car. Your water pump pulls it around untill its flushed and comes out clean.

If your gonna do it by yourself cool is still the easiest and SAFEST way.

thanks for the info on everything. I will get on it this weekend. Either I will do it myself or I will take it in to the shop. Will decide saturday morning I guess. I know mine has never been flushed, thats why I would like to do it completely. Then I can just flush the rad every year and refill.

I also think running a hose in the radiator is a bad idea because of the potential for air pockets to develop. Plus you're gonna get a load of "hose water" sitting in your block afterwards.

this was a good laugh
