Questions about 1st Gen Rx-7s

So I've been thinking about buying a car for a while now and in the beginning I wanted something that made decent power stock so I ruled out the Rx-7s since i couldn't afford a 3rd gen. Then lately after looking at prices and researching I decided i would buy something and then mod it in like a year or so, so I started thinking about engine swapping a Honda or turbo charging a Protege or something. Then the other day i was thinking about how a new law that makes day time driving lights mandatory would suck for people with pop up headlights (I really like them) and I got to thinking of the Rx-7 again. Only problem is a I can't seem to find many parts for the 1st gen, theres a lot of 1st gens around here but nothing else really for some reason, so I was hoping someone on here would be able to tell me about what i could expect from modding one. As far as i could find there aren't really any FI kits out there so I'm wondering what kind of results I could expect from bolt-ons and what not. I love rotaries so if it would be viable to make say 200whp for a couple grand i would be very happy.

1st gens are a bit on the weak side, unless you go with a GSL-SE with the 13b engine. I would only get a GSL-SE, as it is much more car for the money.

2nd gens are nice, and a 89-91 turbo2 fits right into your range of 200hp. 87-88 Turbo 2's can be easily upgraded to 200hp with an exhaust/fuel cut upgrade. 2nd gens are a world apart from 1st gens as far as driving experience. 1st gens being rawer, and more fun to toss, 2nd gens being alot more stable, and less fun to toss about, but rotary+turbo=AWESOME.

on an FB.. the only real power gains will be from exhaust, a bigger carb and a great tune allong with modding the ignition system to the 13B setup.

then u could do some porting to the engine and get more into it if u wish..

Handling is where u will feel the power.. freshin up the suspension and that car will be golden..

one thing abotu whats said above... a NON turbo FC is NOT going to be faster then a 12a 83-85 FB

you can tune some fuel in the fb and it will be quicker then an fc with the same exhaust mods.

Welcome to the rotary section.

First off there are not a lot of aftermarket parts suppliers out there for the sa22/fb chassis just because as you have found they are on the rare side of things when it comes to finding one in good condition. Not a bad chassis choice but they lack a lot compared to some of the later gen rx offerings in terms of chassis, suspension, brakes, and power...the only up they really have is weight advantage.

If your goal is 200whp it can be accomplished. A very simple answer to that would be a streetported 13b with a carb setup on is...probably looking at the 3-4g range for everything needed to finish that up and that estimate is on the high side. Keep an eye out for 2nd gens as it can be a better starting point for somebody new to the rotary world and they have a much much better aftermarket following.

yeah normally the 12a engines are not worth a s*** internally..

I would personally look for a GSL-SE or a FB and do a 13b FI or even carb swap to it after the engine was street ported..

but a bridgeport 12a will net u well into the 200hp..

its all about money..

RX7's (any year) are pricey to get power out of because the big gains come from forced induction OR porting.

Thanks for the info its all appreciated. I can see I have a lot of research to do before i do anything so I will definitely keep a look out for a 2nd gen, but i do see 1st gen GSL-SEs every once in a while so that may just be the way to go.
