question on removing black inserts where fogs go

i wanted my CX7 w/ fogs but they didn't have 1 w/ them in galaxy gray. i'm not sure now if i'm willing to pay $500 for fogs w/ dealer install. i'm looking into aftermarkets. 1 thing i am sure of though, is that the black inserts, where fogs go, have to come out. i don't know why, but they annoy me....cheese up the front. at least for now i want to take those black inserts out. it might even look cool w/out them out w/ no fogs, kinda like big intake holes. may cool brakes too.
- anyway, anyone take them out? is it ok to have them out or should that area be sealed for some reason? not sure what's behind there and what's needed to take them out. bumper may have to come off, i don't know. i haven't looked at it yet.

thanks. it answers everything except what's behind the inserts. is it just open? if so i'll do it. if it looks ok just open, like big air intakes, cool, if not i'll throw in fogs, factory or aftermarkets.

I have a fog lamp kit on order, when I get it, I'll see what is behind the blank inserts.
